sharp," remarked the Lion

"Well,
go to Oz and get my heart," said the Woodman
So he walked
Throne Room and knocked
door

"Come in," called Oz,
Woodman entered and said, "
come
heart
"
"
," answered the little man
"But
to cut
hole in your breast, so
put your heart
right place
it won't hurt you
"
"Oh, no," answered the Woodman
"
feel it at all
"
So Oz brought
pair of tinsmith's shears and cut
small, square hole
left side
Tin Woodman's breast
Then, going to
chest of drawers,
out
pretty heart, made entirely of silk and stuffed with sawdust

"Isn't it
beauty ? " he asked

"
, indeed ! " replied the Woodman, who was greatly pleased
"But
kind heart ? "
"Oh, very ! " answered Oz
He put the heart
Woodman's breast and then replaced the square of tin, soldering it neatly together where it
cut

"There," said he; "now
heart that any man
proud of
I'm sorry I had
patch
breast, but it really couldn't be helped
"
"Never mind the patch," exclaimed the happy Woodman
"
very grateful
, and shall never forget your kindness
"
"Don't speak of it," replied Oz

Then the Tin Woodman went back
friends, who wished him every joy on account
good fortune

The Lion now walked
Throne Room and knocked
door

"Come in," said Oz

"
come
courage," announced the Lion, entering the room

"
," answered the little man; "
get it
"
He went to
cupboard and reaching
high shelf took down
square green bottle, the contents
he poured into
green-gold dish, beautifully carved
Placing this
Cowardly Lion, who sniffed at it
like it, the Wizard said:
"Drink
"
"
it ? " asked the Lion

"Well," answered Oz, "
were inside of you, it
courage
,
, that courage is always inside one; so
really
called courage until
swallowed it
Therefore I advise you to drink it
"
The Lion hesitated no longer, but drank till the dish was empty

"How
feel now ? " asked Oz

"Full of courage," replied the Lion, who went joyfully back
friends
them
good fortune

Oz, left to himself, smiled
success in giving the Scarecrow
Tin Woodman
Lion exactly what they thought they wanted
"How can I help being
humbug,"
, "when all these people make me do things that everybody knows can't
?
easy to
Scarecrow
Lion
Woodman happy, because they imagined
do anything
But
take more than imagination to carry Dorothy back to Kansas, and I'm sure I don't know how it
"
17
How the Balloon Was Launched
For three days Dorothy heard nothing from Oz
These were sad days
little girl, although her friends were all quite happy and contented
The Scarecrow told them there were wonderful thoughts
head; but
say what they were because
no one could understand them but himself
Tin Woodman walked about
his heart rattling around
breast; and
Dorothy he had discovered it
kinder and more tender heart
one he had owned when he
of flesh
The Lion declared
afraid of nothing on earth, and would gladly face an army or
dozen
fierce Kalidahs

Thus each
little party was satisfied except Dorothy, who longed more than ever
back to Kansas

fourth day, to her great joy, Oz sent for her, and when she entered the Throne Room he greeted her pleasantly:
"Sit down, my dear;
found the way
you out
country
"
"And back to Kansas ? " she asked eagerly

"Well, I'm not sure about Kansas," said Oz, "for I haven't the faintest notion
it lies
But the first thing
is to cross the desert, and then it
easy
your way home
"
"How can I cross the desert ? " she inquired

"Well, I'll tell you what
," said the little man
"
, when
country
in
balloon
You also came
air, being carried by
cyclone
So I believe the best way
across the desert
air
Now,
quite beyond my powers
cyclone; but I've been thinking the matter over, and I believe
make
balloon
"
"How ? " asked Dorothy

"A balloon," said Oz, "is made of silk,
coated with glue
the gas
plenty of silk
Palace, so
no trouble to
balloon
But in all this country
no gas
the balloon with,
it float
"
"
won't float," remarked Dorothy, "
of no use
"
"True," answered Oz
"But
another way
it float,
it with hot air
Hot air isn't as good as gas, for
air should get cold the balloon would come down
desert, and
lost
"
"We ! " exclaimed the girl
"
going with me ? "
"Yes,
," replied Oz
"
tired of being such
humbug
If
go out
Palace my people would soon discover
not
Wizard, and then
vexed with me for having deceived them
So
to stay shut up
rooms all day, and it gets tiresome
I'd much rather go back to Kansas
and be in
circus again
"
"
your company," said Dorothy

"
," he answered
"Now,
help me sew the silk together,
begin to work
balloon
"
So Dorothy took
needle and thread, and as fast as Oz cut the strips of silk into proper shape the girl sewed them neatly together
First
strip of light green silk, then
strip of dark green and then
strip of emerald green; for Oz had
fancy to
balloon in different shades
color
It took three days to sew all the strips together, but when
finished they had
big bag of green silk more than twenty feet long

Then Oz painted it
inside with
coat of thin glue,
it airtight, after which he announced
balloon was ready

"But
basket to ride in,"
So he sent the soldier
green whiskers for
big clothes basket, which he fastened with many ropes
bottom
balloon

When
all ready, Oz sent word
people that
going
visit to
great brother Wizard who lived
clouds
The news spread rapidly
city and everyone came
the wonderful sight

Oz ordered the balloon carried out in front
Palace,
people gazed upon it with much curiosity
The Tin Woodman had chopped
big pile of wood, and now
fire of it, and Oz held the bottom
balloon over the fire so
hot air that arose
caught
silken bag
Gradually the balloon swelled out and rose
air, until finally the basket just touched the ground

Then Oz got
basket and said to all the people in
loud voice:
"
now going away
visit
While
gone the Scarecrow will rule over you
I command you to obey him
me
"
The balloon was
tugging hard
rope that held it
ground,
air within
hot, and this made it
lighter in weight
air without
pulled hard to rise
sky

"Come, Dorothy ! " cried the Wizard
"Hurry up, or the balloon will fly away
