I_may take aglance at it in my leisure . by_the_way, it_is curious that you_should_have come from Topeka .I used to_have acorrespondent -- he_is dead now -- old Dr .Lysander Starr, who was mayor in 1890 ."

"Good old Dr .Starr ! " said our visitor ."His name is still honoured .Well, Mr Holmes, I suppose all we_can do is to report to_you and let you_know how we progress .I reckon you_will hear within a day_or_two ." with_this assurance our American bowed and departed .

Holmes had lit his pipe, and he sat for some_time with acurious smile upon his face .

"Well ? " I asked at last .

" I_am wondering, Watson -- just wondering ! "

"At what ? "

Holmes took his pipe from_his lips .

" i_was wondering, Watson, what on earth could_be the object of_this man in telling us such arigmarole of lies .I nearly asked him so -- for there_are times when abrutal frontal attack is_the best policy -- but I judged it better to let him think he had fooled us . here_is aman with an English coat frayed at_the elbow and trousers bagged at_the knee with ayear's wear, and yet by_this document and by his own account he_is aprovincial American lately landed in London . there_have been no advertisements in_the agony columns . you_know that I miss nothing there . they_are my favourite covert for putting up abird, and i_would never have overlooked such acock pheasant as_that .I never knew aDr .Lysander Starr, of Topeka .Touch him where you_would he_was false . i_think the fellow is really an American, but he has worn his accent smooth with years of London . what_is his game, then, and what motive lies behind this preposterous search for Garridebs ? It's worth our attention, for, granting that_the man is arascal, he_is certainly acomplex and ingenious one . we_must now find out if our other correspondent is afraud also .Just ring him up, Watson ."

I_did so, and heard athin, quavering voice at_the other end of_the line .

"Yes, yes, I_am Mr Nathan Garrideb .Is Mr Holmes there ? i_should very_much like to_have aword with Mr Holmes ."

My friend took the instrument and I heard the usual syncopated dialogue .

"Yes, he has_been here .I understand that you don't know him .. .. How long ? .. .Only two days ! .. .Yes, yes, of_course, it_is amost captivating prospect . will_you be at home this evening ? I suppose your namesake will_not_be there ? .. . very_good, we_will come then, for i_would rather have achat without him .. .. Dr .Watson will come with me .. .. I understand from your note that you_did_not go out often .. .. Well, we_shall_be round about six . you_need not mention it to_the American lawyer .. .. very_good .Good-bye ! "

it_was twilight of alovely spring evening, and even Little Ryder Street, one_of_the smaller offshoots from_the Edgware Road, within astone-cast of old Tyburn Tree of evil memory, looked golden and wonderful in_the slanting rays of_the setting sun .The particular house to_which we were directed was alarge, old-fashioned, Early Georgian edifice, with aflat brick face broken only by two deep bay windows on_the ground floor . it_was on_this ground floor that_our client lived, and, indeed, the low windows proved to_be the front of_the huge room in_which he spent his waking hours .Holmes pointed as_we passed to_the small brass plate which bore the curious name .

"Up some_years, Watson," he remarked, indicating its discoloured surface ."It's his real name, anyhow, and_that is something to note ."

The house had acommon stair, and there were anumber of names painted in_the hall, some indicating offices and some private chambers . it_was not acollection of residential flats, but rather the abode of Bohemian bachelors .Our client opened the door for_us himself and apologized by saying that_the woman in charge left at four o'clock .Mr Nathan Garrideb proved to_be avery tall, loosejointed, round-backed person, gaunt and bald, some sixty-odd years_of_age .He had acadaverous face, with_the dull dead skin of aman to_whom exercise was unknown .Large round spectacles and asmall projecting goat's beard combined with_his stooping attitude to_give him an expression of peering curiosity .The general effect, however, was amiable, though eccentric .

The room was as curious as its occupant .It looked like asmall museum . it_was both broad and deep, with cupboards and cabinets all round, crowded with specimens, geological and anatomical .Cases of butterflies and moths flanked each side of_the entrance .alarge table in_the centre was littered with all sorts of debris, while the tall brass tube of apowerful microscope bristled up among them .As I glanced round i_was surprised at_the universality of_the man's interests .Here was acase of ancient coins . there_was acabinet of flint instruments .Behind his central table was alarge cupboard of fossil bones .Above was aline of plaster skulls with_such names as "Neanderthal," "Heidelberg," "Cro-Magnon" printed beneath them . it_was clear that he_was astudent of many subjects .As he stood in front of us now, he held apiece of chamois leather in_his right hand with_which he_was polishing acoin .

"Syracusan -- of_the best period," he explained, holding it up ."They degenerated greatly towards the end .At their best I hold them supreme, though some prefer the Alexandrian school . you_will_find achair here, Mr Holmes .Pray allow me to clear these bones .And you, sir -- ah, yes, Dr .Watson -- if_you_would_have the goodness to_put the Japanese vase to one side . you_see round me my little interests in life .My doctor lectures me about never going out, but why should I go out when I_have so_much to hold me here ? I_can assure you that_the adequate cataloguing of one of_those cabinets would take me three good months ."

Holmes looked round him with curiosity .

"But do_you tell me that you never go out ? " he_said .

"Now and again I drive down to Sotheby's or Christie's .Otherwise I very seldom leave my room . I_am not too strong, and my researches are very absorbing .But you_can imagine, Mr Holmes, what aterrific shock -- pleasant but terrific -- it_was for_me when I heard of_this unparalleled good fortune .It only needs one more Garrideb to complete the matter, and surely we_can find one .I had abrother, but he_is dead, and female relatives are disqualified .But there must surely be others in_the_world .I had heard that you handled strange cases, and_that was why I_sent to_you . of_course, this American gentleman is quite right, and i_should_have taken his advice first, but I acted for_the best ."

" i_think you acted very wisely indeed," said Holmes ."But are_you really anxious to acquire an estate in America ? "

"Certainly not, sir .Nothing would induce me to leave my collection .But this gentleman has assured me that he_will buy me out as_soon_as we_have established our claim .Five million dollars was_the sum named . there_are adozen specimens in_the market at_the present moment which fill gaps in my collection, and which I_am unable to purchase for want of afew hundred pounds .Just think what I_could do with five million dollars .Why, I_have the nucleus of anational collection . I_shall_be the Hans Sloane of_my age ."

His eyes gleamed behind his great spectacles . it_was very clear that no pains would_be spared by_Mr Nathan Garrideb in finding anamesake .

"I merely called to_make your acquaintance, and there_is no reason why i_should interrupt your studies," said Holmes ."I prefer to establish personal touch with those with_whom I_do business . there_are few questions I_need ask, for I_have your very clear narrative in my pocket, and I filled up the blanks when_this American gentleman called .I understand that up to_this week you were unaware of_his existence ."

" that_is so . he_called last Tuesday ."

"Did he tell you of_our interview to-day ? "

"Yes, he_came straight back to_me .He had_been very angry ."

"Why should he be angry ? "

" he_seemed to_think it_was some reflection on_his honour .But he_was quite cheerful again when he returned ."

"Did he suggest any course of action ? "

"No, sir, he_did_not ."

"Has he had, or asked for, any money from_you ? "

"No, sir, never ! "

" you_see no possible object he has in view ? "

"None, except what he states ."

"Did you tell him of_our telephone appointment ? "

"Yes, sir, I_did ."

Holmes was lost in thought .I could_see that he_was puzzled .
