awant of it we_must suspect deception ."

"I hardly follow you ."

"Well now, Watson, suppose for amoment that we visualize you in_the character of awoman who, in acold, premeditated fashion, is about to_get rid of arival . you_have planned it .anote has_been written .The victim has_come . you_have your weapon .The crime is done . it_has_been workmanlike and complete . do_you tell me that after carrying out so crafty acrime you_would now ruin your reputation as acriminal by forgetting to fling your weapon into those adjacent reed-beds which would forever cover it, but you_must needs carry it carefully home and put it in your own wardrobe, the very first place that_would_be searched ? Your best friends would hardly call you aschemer, Watson, and yet I_could_not picture you doing anything so crude as_that ."

" in_the excitement of_the moment "

"No, no, Watson, i_will_not admit that_it_is possible .Where acrime is coolly premeditated, then the means of covering it are coolly premeditated also . I_hope, therefore, that we_are in_the presence of aserious misconception ."

"But there_is so_much to explain ."

"Well, we_shall set about explaining it .When once your point of view is changed, the very thing which_was so damning becomes aclue to_the truth .For example, there_is this revolver .Miss Dunbar disclaims all knowledge of it . on_our new theory she_is speaking truth when she says so .Therefore, it_was placed in her wardrobe .Who placed it there ? Someone who wished to incriminate her .Was not that person the actual criminal ? you_see how we come at once upon amost fruitful line of inquiry ."

We were compelled to_spend the night at Winchester, as_the formalities had_not yet been completed, but next morning, in_the company of Mr Joyce Cummings, the rising barrister who was entrusted with_the defence, we were allowed to_see the young lady in her cell .I had expected from all that we had heard to_see abeautiful woman, but I_can never forget the effect which Miss Dunbar produced upon me . it_was no wonder that even the masterful millionaire had found in her something more powerful than himself -- something which could control and guide him .One felt, too, as one looked at_the strong, clear-cut, and yet sensitive face, that even should she be capable of some impetuous deed, none the less there_was an innate nobility of character which would make her influence always for_the good .She was abrunette, tall, with anoble figure and commanding presence, but her dark eyes had in_them the appealing, helpless expression of_the hunted creature who feels the nets around it, but can_see no way out from_the toils .Now, as she realized the presence and_the help of_my famous friend, there came atouch of colour in her wan cheeks and alight of hope began to glimmer in_the glance which she turned upon us .

"Perhaps Mr Neil Gibson has told you something of what occurred between_us ? " she asked in alow, agitated voice .

"Yes," Holmes answered, " you_need not pain yourself by entering into that part of_the story .After seeing you, I_am prepared to accept Mr Gibson's statement both as_to_the influence which you had over him and as_to_the innocence of your relations with_him .But why was_the whole situation not brought out in court ? "

"It seemed to_me incredible that such acharge could_be sustained . i_thought that if_we waited the whole thing must clear itself up without our being compelled to enter into painful details of_the inner life of_the family .But I understand that far from clearing it has become even more serious ."

"My dear young lady," cried Holmes earnestly, "I beg you to_have no illusions upon_the point .Mr Cummings here would assure you that all the cards are at present against us, and_that we_must do everything that_is possible if_we_are to win clear .It would_be acruel deception to pretend that you_are_not in very great danger . give_me all the help_you can, then, to_get at_the truth ."

" i_will conceal nothing ."

"Tell us, then, of your true relations with Mr Gibson's wife ."

"She hated me, Mr Holmes .She hated me with all the fervour of her tropical nature .She was awoman who_would do nothing by halves, and_the measure of her love for her husband was_the measure also of her hatred for_me . it_is probable that she misunderstood our relations . i_would_not wish to wrong her, but she loved so vividly in aphysical sense that she_could hardly understand the mental, and even spiritual, tie which held her husband to_me, or imagine that_it_was only my desire to influence his power to good ends which kept me under his roof . I_can_see now that i_was wrong .Nothing could justify me in remaining where i_was acause of unhappiness, and yet it_is certain that_the unhappiness would_have remained even if I had left the house ."

"Now, Miss Dunbar," said Holmes, "I beg you to_tell us exactly what occurred that evening ."

" I_can tell you the truth so_far as I_know it, Mr Holmes, but I_am in_a_position to_prove nothing, and there_are points -- the most vital points -- which I_can neither explain nor can I imagine any explanation ."

"If you_will_find the facts, perhaps others may find the explanation ."

"With regard, then, to my presence at Thor Bridge that night, I received anote from Mrs Gibson in_the morning .It lay on_the table of_the schoolroom, and it may have_been left there by her own hand .It implored me to_see her there after dinner, said she had something important to_say to_me, and asked me to leave an answer on_the sundial in_the garden, as she desired no one to_be in_our confidence . I_saw no reason for such secrecy, but I_did as she asked, accepting the appointment .She asked me to destroy her note and I burned it in_the schoolroom grate .She was very_much afraid of her husband, who treated her with aharshness for_which I frequently reproached him, and I_could only imagine that she acted in_this_way because she did_not wish him to_know of_our interview ."

"Yet she kept your reply very carefully ? "

"Yes . i_was surprised to hear that she had it in her hand when she died ."

"Well, what happened then ? "

"I went down as I had promised .When I reached the bridge she was waiting for_me .Never did I_realize till that moment how this poor creature hated me .She was like amad woman -- indeed, i_think she was amad woman, subtly mad with_the deep power of deception which insane people may_have .How else could she have met me with unconcern every day and yet had so raging ahatred of me in her heart ? i_will_not say what she said .She poured her whole wild fury out in burning and horrible words . I_did_not even answer -- I_could_not . it_was dreadful to_see her .I put my hands to my ears and rushed away .When I left her she was standing, still shrieking out her curses at me, in_the mouth of_the bridge ."

"Where she was afterwards found ? "

"Within afew yards from_the spot ."

"And yet, presuming that she met her death shortly after you left her, you heard no shot~"

"No, I heard nothing .But, indeed, Mr Holmes, i_was so agitated and horrified by_this terrible outbreak that I rushed to_get back to_the peace of_my own room, and i_was incapable of noticing anything which happened ."

"You say that you returned to your room .Did you leave it again before next morning ? "

"Yes, when_the alarm came that_the poor creature had met her death I ran out with_the others "

"Did you_see Mr Gibson ? "

"Yes, he had just returned from_the bridge when I_saw him .He had sent for_the doctor and_the police ."

"Did he seem to_you much perturbed ? "

" Mr Gibson is avery strong, self-contained man . I_do_not_think that he_would ever show his emotions on_the surface .But I, who knew him so_well, could_see that he_was deeply concerned ."

"Then we come to_the all-important point .This pistol that was found in your room .Had you ever seen it before ? "

"Never, I swear it ."

"When was_it found ? "

"Next morning, when_the police made their search ."

"Among your clothes ? "

"Yes, on_the floor of_my wardrobe under my dresses ."

" you_could_not guess how long it had_been there ? "

"It had_not_been there the morning before ."

"How do_you_know ? "

"Because I tidied out the wardrobe ."

" that_is final .Then someone came into your room and placed the pistol there in_order to inculpate you ."

"It must have_been so ."

"And when ? "

"It could only have_been at meal-time, or else at_the hours when i_would_be in_the schoolroom with_the children ."

" as_you were when_you got the note ? "

"Yes, from_that_time onward for_the whole morning ."

" thank_you, Miss Dunbar . is_there any_other point which could help me in_the investigation ? "

" I_can think of none ."

" there_was some sign of violence on_the stonework of_the bridge -- aperfectly fresh chip just opposite the body .Could you suggest any possible explanation of_that ? "

"Surely it must_be amere coincidence ."

"Curious, Miss Dunbar, very curious .Why should it appear at_the very time
