I_have an appointment at eleven ."

" I_know you_have," our visitor gasped, shooting out short sentences like aman who_is out of breath ." Mr Gibson is coming .Mr Gibson is my employer . I_am manager of_his estate .Mr Holmes, he_is avillain -- an infernal villain ."

"Strong language, Mr Bates ."

" I_have to_be emphatic, Mr Holmes, for_the_time is so limited . i_would_not have him find me here for_the world . he_is almost due now .But i_was so situated that I_could_not come earlier .His secretary, Mr Ferguson, only told me this_morning of_his appointment with_you ."

"And you_are his manager ? "

" I_have_given him notice .In acouple of weeks I_shall_have shaken off his accursed slavery .ahard man, Mr Holmes, hard to all about him .Those public charities are ascreen to_cover his private iniquities .But his wife was his chief victim . he_was brutal to her -- yes, sir, brutal ! How she came by her death I_do_not know, but I_am_sure that he had made her life amisery to her .She was acreature of_the tropics, aBrazilian by birth, as no_doubt you_know ."

"No, it had escaped me ."

"Tropical by birth and tropical by nature .achild of_the sun and of passion .She had loved him as such women can love, but when her own physical charms had faded -- I_am told that_they once were great -- there_was nothing to hold him .We all liked her and felt for her and hated him for_the way that he treated her .But he_is plausible and cunning . that_is all I_have to_say to_you .Don't take him at his face value . there_is more behind .Now I'll go .No, no, don't detain me ! he_is almost due ."

With afrightened look at_the clock our strange visitor literally ran to_the door and disappeared .

"Well ! Well ! " said Holmes after an interval of silence ." Mr Gibson seems to_have anice loyal household .But the warning is auseful one, and now we_can only wait till the man himself appears ."

Sharp at_the hour we heard aheavy step upon_the stairs, and_the famous millionaire was shown into_the room .As I looked upon him I understood not_only the fears and dislike of_his manager but also the execrations which so_many business rivals have heaped upon his head .If I were asculptor and desired to idealize the successful man of affairs, iron of nerve and leathery of conscience, i_should choose Mr Neil Gibson as my model .His tall, gaunt, craggy figure had asuggestion of hunger and rapacity .An Abraham Lincoln keyed to base uses instead of high ones would give some idea of_the man .His face might_have_been chiselled in granite, hard-set, craggy, remorseless, with deep lines upon it, the scars of many acrisis .Cold gray eyes, looking shrewdly out from under bristling brows, surveyed us each in turn .He bowed in perfunctory fashion as Holmes mentioned my name, and then with amasterful air of possession he drew achair up_to my companion and seated himself with_his bony knees almost touching him .

"Let me say right here, Mr Holmes," he began, "that money is nothing to_me in this_case . you_can burn it if_it's any use in lighting you to_the truth .This woman is innocent and this woman has_to be cleared, and it's up to_you to_do_it .Name your figure ! "

"My professional charges are upon afixed scale," said Holmes coldly ." I_do_not vary them, save when I remit them altogether ."

"Well, if dollars make no difference to_you, think of_the reputation . if_you pull this off every paper in England and America will_be booming you .You'll be the talk of two continents ."

" thank_you, Mr Gibson, I_do_not_think that I_am in need of booming .It may surprise you to_know that I prefer to work anonymously, and that_it_is the problem itself which attracts me .But we_are wasting time . let_us get down to_the facts ."

" i_think that you_will_find all the main ones in_the press reports .I don't know that I_can add anything which will help_you .But if_there_is anything you_would wish more light upon -well, I_am here to_give it ."

"Well, there_is just one point ."

" what_is it ? "

"What were the exact relations between you and Miss Dunbar ? "

The Gold King gave aviolent start and half rose from_his chair .Then his massive calm came back to him .

"I suppose you_are within your rights -- and maybe doing your duty -- in asking such aquestion, Mr Holmes ."

" we_will agree to suppose so," said Holmes .

"Then I_can assure you that_our relations were entirely and always those of an employer towards ayoung lady whom he never conversed with, or ever saw, save when she was in_the company of_his children ."

Holmes rose from_his chair .

" I_am arather busy man, Mr Gibson," said he, "and I_have no time or taste for aimless conversations . i_wish you goodmorning ."

Our visitor had risen also, and_his great loose figure towered above Holmes . there_was an angry gleam from under those bristling brows and atinge of colour in_the sallow cheeks .

"What the devil do_you_mean by_this, Mr Holmes ? do_you dismiss my case ? "

"Well, Mr Gibson, at_least I dismiss you . i_should_have thought my words were plain ."

"Plain enough, but what's at_the back of it ? Raising the price on me, or afraid to tackle it, or what ? I've aright to aplain answer ."

"Well, perhaps you_have," said Holmes ."I'll give_you one . this_case is quite sufficiently complicated to start with without the further difficulty of false information ."

"Meaning that I lie ."

"Well, i_was trying to express it as delicately as I_could, but if_you insist upon_the word i_will_not contradict you ."

I sprang to my feet, for_the expression upon_the millionaire's face was fiendish in its intensity, and he had raised his great knotted fist .Holmes smiled languidly and reached his hand out for_his pipe .

"Don't be noisy, Mr Gibson . I_find that after breakfast even the smallest argument is unsettling .I suggest_that astroll in_the morning air and alittle quiet thought will_be greatly to your advantage ."

With an effort the Gold King mastered his fury . I_could_not but admire him, for by asupreme self-command he had turned in aminute from ahot flame of anger to afrigid and contemptuous indifference .

"Well, it's your choice .I guess you_know how to run your own business . I_can't make you touch the case against your will .You've done yourself no good this_morning, Mr Holmes, for I_have broken stronger men than you .No man ever crossed me and was_the better for_it ."

" so_many have said so, and yet here I_am," said Holmes, smiling ."Well, good-morning, Mr Gibson . you_have a good_deal yet to learn ."

Our visitor made anoisy exit, but Holmes smoked in imperturbable silence with dreamy eyes fixed upon_the ceiling .

"Any views, Watson ? " he asked at last .

"Well, Holmes, I_must confess that when I consider that_this_is aman who_would certainly brush any obstacle from_his path, and when I remember that his wife may have_been an obstacle and an object of dislike, as_that man Bates plainly told us, it seems to_me --"

"Exactly .And to_me also ."

"But what were his relations with_the governess, and how did you discover them ? "

"Bluff, Watson, bluff ! When I considered the passionate, unconventional, unbusinesslike tone of_his letter and contrasted it with_his self-contained manner and appearance, it_was pretty clear that there_was some deep emotion which centred upon_the accused woman rather than upon_the victim .We've got to understand the exact relations of_those three people if_we_are to reach the truth .You saw the frontal attack which I_made upon him, and how imperturbably he received it .Then I bluffed him by giving him the impression that i_was absolutely certain, when in reality i_was only extremely suspicious ."

"Perhaps he_will come back ? "

" he_is sure to_come back . he_must come back . he_can't leave it where it_is .Ha ! isn't that aring ? Yes, there_is his footstep .Well, Mr Gibson, i_was just saying to Dr .Watson that you were somewhat overdue ."

The Gold King had reentered the room in amore chastened mood than he had left it .His wounded pride still showed in_his resentful eyes, but his common sense had shown him that he_must yield if he_would attain his end .

"I've been thinking it over, Mr Holmes, and I_feel that I_have_been hasty in taking your remarks amiss . you_are justified in getting down to_the facts, whatever they_may_be, and i_think the more of you for_it
