if_they refused, and promised them his mercy if_they obeyed; and they_did obey .The first step is gained, they know the duty of adoring and obeying God; every_other truth proceeds from_this, and I_have no_doubt that my savages will one day become good Christians .My method of instruction is suited to_their limited capacity .I prove to_them that their wooden idols, made by their own hands, could neither create, hear them, nor protect them . I_have shown them God in_his works, have declared him to_be as good as he_is powerful, hating evil, cruelty, murder, and cannibalism, and they_have renounced all these .In their late wars they_have either released or adopted their prisoners . if_they carried off your wife and son, they intended it for agood action, as_you_will soon understand ."

I_could_not ask Francis any questions, as Bara-ourou continued playing with_him, so turning to Ernest, I asked him what passed when_the savages joined him ?

" when_you left me," said he, "I amused myself by searching for shells, plants, and zoophytes, with_which the rocks abound, and I_have added a good_deal to my collection . i_was at some distance from_the pinnace, when I heard aconfused sound of voices, and concluded that_the savages were coming; in_fact, ten or adozen issued from_the road you had entered, and I_cannot comprehend how you missed meeting them .Fearing they_would attempt to_take possession of_my pinnace, I returned speedily, and seized aloaded musket, though I determined to use it only to defend my own life, or the pinnace .I stood on_the deck in an attitude as bold and imposing as I_could command; but I_did_not succeed in intimidating them .They leaped, one after_the other, on deck, and surrounded me, uttering loud cries . I_could_not discover whether they were cries of joy or of fury; but I showed no fear, and addressed them in afriendly tone, in some words from Capt .Cook's vocabulary; but they_did_not seem to comprehend me, neither could I understand any of theirs except écroué (father), which they frequently repeated, and _tara-tauo (woman) . one_of_them had Fritz's gun, from_which I concluded they were of_the party that had carried off Jack . i_took it, and showing him mine, endeavoured to_make him understand that_it also belonged to_me .He thought I wished to exchange, and readily offered to return it, and take mine . this_would not have suited me; Fritz's gun was discharged, and I_could_not let them have mine loaded . to_prevent accident, surrounded as i_was, I decided to_give them afright, and seeing abird flying above us, i_took aim so correctly, that my shot brought down the bird, ablue pigeon .They were for amoment stupified with terror; then immediately all left the pinnace, except Parabéry; he_seemed to_be pleased with me, often pointing to_the sky, saying mété_, which_means good_, I believe .His comrades were examining the dead bird .Some touched their own shoulders, to_try if_they were wounded as_well as_the bird and Jack had_been, which convinced me they had carried him off .I tried to_make Parabéry understand my suspicion, and i_think I succeeded, for he_made me an affirmative sign, pointing to_the interior of_the island, and touching his shoulder with an air of pity . i_took several things from_the chest, and gave them to him, making signs that he_should show them to_the others, and induce them to return to_me .He comprehended me very_well, and complied with my wishes . i_was soon surrounded by_the whole party, begging of me . i_was busy distributing beads, mirrors, and small knives when_you came, and we_are now excellent friends . two_or_three of_them returned to_the wood, and brought me cocoa-nuts and bananas .But we_must_be careful to hide our guns, of which_they_have aholy horror .And now, dear father, i_think we ought not to_call these people savages . they_have the simplicity of childhood; atrifle irritates them, atrifle appeases them; they_are grateful and affectionate . I_find them neither cruel nor barbarous .They have_done me no harm, when they_might easily have killed me, thrown me into_the sea, or carried me away ."

" we_must not," said I, "judge of all savage people by_these, who_have_had the benefit of avirtuous teacher .Mr Willis has already cast into their hearts the seeds of_that divine religion, which commands us to_do unto others as we_would they should do unto us, and to pardon and love our enemies ."

While we were discoursing, we arrived at aspot where the canoes had already landed; we were about to_do_the same, but the king did_not seem inclined to quit the pinnace, but continued speaking to_the missionary . i_was still fearful that he_wished to_keep Francis, to_whom he_seemed to_be more and more attached, holding him constantly on_his knee; but at last, to my great joy, he placed him in my arms .

"He keeps his word with_you," said Mr Willis ." you_may carry him to_his mother; but, in return, he wishes you to permit him to_go in your pinnace to_his abode on_the other side of_the strait, that he_may show it to_the women, and he promises to bring it back; perhaps there would_be danger in refusing him ."

I agreed with_him; but still there_was adifficulty in granting this request .If he chose to_keep it, how should we return ? Besides, it contained our only barrel of powder, and all our articles of traffic, and how could we expect it would escape pillage ?

Mr Willis confessed he had_not yet been able to cure their fondness for theft, and suggested, as_the only means of security, that i_should accompany the king, and bring the pinnace back, which_was then to_be committed to_the charge of Parabéry, for whose honesty he_would_be responsible .

Here was another delay; the day was so_far advanced, that I might_not, perhaps, be_able to return before night .Besides, though my wife did_not know we were so near her, she knew they had carried away Francis, and she_would certainly be very uneasy about him .Bara-ourou looked very impatient, and as it_was necessary to answer him, I decided at once; I resigned Francis to_the missionary, entreating him to_take him to_his mother, to_prepare her for_our approach, and to relate the cause of_our delay . i_told my sons, it_was my desire they should accompany me .Fritz agreed rather indignantly, and Ernest with calmness .Mr Willis told the king, that in gratitude to him, and to_do him honour, I and my sons wished to accompany him .He appeared much flattered at_this, made my sons seat themselves on each side of him, endeavoured to pronounce their names, and finished by exchanging names as atoken of friendship, calling Fritz, Bara_; Ernest, Ourou_; and himself, Fritz-Ernest .Mr Willis and Francis left us; our hearts were sad to_see them go where all our wishes centred; but the die was cast .The king gave the signal to depart; the canoes took the lead, and we followed .In an hour we saw the royal palace . it_was atolerably large hut, constructed of bamboos and palm-leaves, very neatly .Several women were seated before it, busily employed in making the short petticoats of reeds which they all wore .Their hair was very carefully braided in tufts on_the crown of_the head; none were good-looking, except two daughters of_the king, about ten and twelve years old, who, though very dark, were graceful: these, no_doubt, he intended for wives for_my Francis .We disembarked about ahundred yards from_the hut .The women came to meet us, carrying abranch of_the mimosa in each hand; they then performed asingular kind of dance, entwining their arms and shaking their feet, but never moving from_the spot; this they accompanied with awild chant, which_was anything but musical .The king seemed pleased with it; and, calling his wives and daughters, he showed them his tayo, Bara and Ourou_, calling himself Fritz-Ernest; he then joined in_the dance, dragging my sons with_him, who managed it pretty well .As for_me, he treated me with great respect, always calling me écroué_--father, and made me sit down on alarge trunk of atree before his house; which_was, doubtless, his throne, for he placed me there with great ceremony, rubbing his royal nose against mine . after_the dance was concluded, the women retired to_the hut, and returned to offer us acollation, served up in_the shells of cocoa-nuts . it_was asort of paste, composed, I believe, of different sorts of fruit, mixed up with akind of flour and_the milk of_the cocoa-nut .This mixture was detestable to_me; but I_made up for_it with some kernel of cocoa-nuts and_the bread-fruit .Perceiving that I liked these, Bara-ourou ordered some_of_them to_be gathered, and carried to_the pinnace .

The hut was backed by awood of palms and other trees, so that_our provision was readily made .Still there_was time for_my sons to run to_the pinnace, attended by Parabéry, and bring from_the chest some beads, mirrors, scissors, needles and pins, to distribute to_the ladies . when_they brought the fruit they had gathered, I_made asign to Bara-ourou to_take them to_see the pinnace; he_called them, and_they followed him timidly, and submitting to_his wishes in everything, They carried the fruit two and two, in asort of baskets, very skilfully woven in rushes, which appeared to_have aEuropean form .They had no furniture in their dwelling but mats, which were doubtless their beds, and some trunks of trees, serving for seats and tables .Several baskets were suspended to_the bamboo which formed the walls, and also lances, slings, clubs, and other similar weapons; from_which I concluded they were anation of warriors . I_did_not observe much, however, for_my thoughts were in_the_future, and i_was very impatient for_our departure .I hastened to_the pinnace, and my sons distributed their gifts to_the females, who did_not dare to express their delight; but it_was evident in their countenances .They immediately began to adorn themselves with their presents, and appeared to value the mirrors much more than their husbands had done .They soon understood their use, and employed them to arrange with taste the strings of beads round their necks, heads, and arms .

At last the signal was given for_our departure; I rubbed my nose against that of_the king .I added to my presents
