of_the matter," Holmes observed ."Would you mind letting_us know what you_have seen and done ? "

" I_have no objection," Lestrade answered, seating himself ."I freely confess that i_was of_the opinion that Stangerson was concerned in_the death of Drebber .This fresh development has shown me that i_was completely mistaken .Full of_the one idea, I set myself to_find out what had become of_the Secretary .They had_been seen together at Euston Station about half-past eight on_the evening of_the third .At two in_the morning Drebber had_been found in_the Brixton Road .The question which confronted me was to_find out how Stangerson had_been employed between 8 .30 and_the time of_the crime, and what had become of him afterwards .I telegraphed to Liverpool, giving adescription of_the man, and warning them to_keep awatch upon_the American boats .I then set to work calling upon all the hotels and lodging-houses in_the vicinity of Euston . you_see, I argued that if Drebber and_his companion had become separated, the natural course for_the latter would_be to_put up somewhere in_the vicinity for_the night, and then to hang about_the station again next morning ."

" they_would_be likely to agree on some meeting-place beforehand," remarked Holmes .

"So it proved .I spent the whole of yesterday evening in making enquiries entirely without avail . this_morning I began very early, and at eight o'clock I reached Halliday's Private Hotel, in Little George Street .On my enquiry as_to whether aMr Stangerson was living there, they at once answered me in_the affirmative .

"` no_doubt you_are the gentleman whom he_was expecting,' they said .`He has_been waiting for agentleman for two days .'

"`Where is he now ? ' I asked .

"` he_is upstairs in bed . he_wished to_be called at nine .'

"` i_will go up and_see him at once,' I_said .

"It seemed to_me that my sudden appearance might shake his nerves and lead him to_say something unguarded .The Boots volunteered to show me the room: it_was on_the second floor, and there_was asmall corridor leading up to_it .The Boots pointed out the door to_me, and was about to_go downstairs again when I_saw something that made me feel sickish, in_spite of_my twenty years' experience .From under the door there curled alittle red ribbon of blood, which had meandered across the passage and formed alittle pool along the skirting at_the other side . I_gave acry, which brought the Boots back .He nearly fainted when he_saw it .The door was locked on_the inside, but we put our shoulders to_it, and knocked it in .The window of_the room was open, and beside the window, all huddled up, lay the body of aman in_his nightdress . he_was quite dead, and had_been for some_time, for_his limbs were rigid and cold .When we turned him over, the Boots recognized him at once as being the same gentleman who had engaged the room under the name of Joseph Stangerson .The cause of death was adeep stab in_the left side, which_must have penetrated the heart .And now comes the strangest part of_the affair .What do_you suppose was above the murdered man ? "

I_felt acreeping of_the flesh, and apresentiment of coming horror, even before Sherlock Holmes answered .

"The word RACHE, written in letters of blood," he_said .

"That was_it," said Lestrade, in an awe-struck voice; and we were all silent for awhile .

there_was something so methodical and so incomprehensible about_the deeds of_this unknown assassin, that_it imparted afresh ghastliness to_his crimes .My nerves, which were steady enough on_the field of battle tingled as i_thought of it .

"The man was seen," continued Lestrade ."A milk boy, passing on_his way to_the dairy, happened to walk down the lane which leads from_the mews at_the back of_the hotel .He noticed that aladder, which usually lay there, was raised against one_of_the windows of_the second floor, which_was wide open .After passing, he looked back and saw aman descend the ladder . he_came down so quietly and openly that_the boy imagined him to_be some carpenter or joiner at work in_the hotel . he_took no particular notice of him, beyond thinking in_his own mind that_it_was early for him to_be at work .He has an impression that_the man was tall, had areddish face, and was dressed in along, brownish coat . he_must_have stayed in_the room some little time after_the murder, for we_found blood-stained water in_the basin, where he had washed his hands, and marks on_the sheets where he had deliberately wiped his knife ."

I glanced at Holmes on hearing the description of_the murderer, which tallied so exactly with_his own . there_was, however, no trace of exultation or satisfaction upon his face .

"Did you find nothing in_the room which could furnish aclue to_the murderer ? " he asked .

"Nothing .Stangerson had Drebber's purse in_his pocket, but it seems that_this was usual, as he_did all the paying . there_was eighty odd pounds in_it, but nothing had_been taken .Whatever the motives of_these extraordinary crimes, robbery is certainly not one_of_them .There were no papers or memoranda in_the murdered man's pocket, except asingle telegram, dated from Cleveland about amonth ago, and containing the words, `J .H .is in Europe .' there_was no name appended to_this message ."

"And there_was nothing else ? " Holmes asked .

"Nothing of any importance .The man's novel, with_which he had read himself to sleep was lying upon_the bed, and_his pipe was on achair beside him . there_was aglass of water on_the table, and on_the window-sill asmall chip ointment box containing acouple of pills ."

Sherlock Holmes sprang from_his chair with an exclamation of delight .

"The last link," he cried, exultantly ."My case is complete ."

The two detectives stared at him in amazement .

" I_have now in my hands," my companion said, confidently, "all the threads which_have formed such atangle . there_are, of_course, details to_be filled in, but I_am as certain of all the main facts, from_the time that Drebber parted from Stangerson at_the station, up_to_the discovery of_the body of_the latter, as_if I had seen them with my own eyes . i_will give_you aproof of_my knowledge .Could you lay your hand upon those pills ? "

" I_have them," said Lestrade, producing asmall white box; " i_took them and_the purse and_the telegram, intending to_have them put in aplace of safety at_the Police Station .It was_the merest chance my taking these pills, for I_am bound to_say that I_do_not attach any importance to_them ."

"Give them here," said Holmes ."Now, Doctor," turning to_me, "are those ordinary pills ? "

They certainly were_not .They were of apearly grey colour, small, round, and almost transparent against the light ."From their lightness and transparency, i_should imagine that_they_are soluble in water," I remarked .

"Precisely so," answered Holmes ."Now would you mind going down and fetching that poor little devil of aterrier which_has been bad so_long, and which the landlady wanted you to_put out of_its pain yesterday ."

I went downstairs and carried the dog upstair in my arms .It's laboured breathing and glazing eye showed that_it_was not far from its end .Indeed, its snow-white muzzle proclaimed that_it had already exceeded the usual term of canine existence .I placed it upon acushion on_the rug .

" i_will now cut one_of_these pills in two," said Holmes, and drawing his penknife he suited the action to_the word ."One half we return into_the box for future purposes .The other half i_will place in_this wine glass, in which_is ateaspoonful of water .You perceive that_our friend, the Doctor, is right, and_that it readily dissolves ."

" this_may_be very interesting," said Lestrade, in_the injured tone of one who suspects that he_is being laughed at, "I cannot_see, however, what it has_to do with_the death of Mr Joseph Stangerson ."

"Patience, my friend, patience ! you_will_find in_time
