I_have no time for trifles," he answered, brusquely; then with asmile, "Excuse my rudeness .You broke the thread of_my thoughts; but perhaps it_is as_well .So you actually were_not able to_see that that man was asergeant of Marines ? "

"No, indeed ."

" it_was easier to_know it than to explain why I_knew it . if_you were asked to_prove that two and two made four, you_might find some difficulty, and yet you_are quite_sure of_the fact .Even across the street I could_see agreat blue anchor tattooed on_the back of_the fellow's hand .That smacked of_the sea .He had amilitary carriage, however, and regulation side whiskers .There we_have the marine . he_was aman with some amount of self-importance and acertain air of command . you_must_have observed the way in_which he held his head and swung his cane .asteady, respectable, middle-aged man, too, on_the face of him -- all facts which led me to_believe that he had_been asergeant ."

"Wonderful ! " I ejaculated .

"Commonplace," said Holmes, though i_thought from_his expression that he_was pleased at my evident surprise and admiration ." I_said just now that there were no criminals .It appears that I_am wrong -- look at_this ! " He threw me over the note which the commissionaire had brought ." {7}

"Why," I cried, as I cast my eye over it, " this_is terrible ! "

"It does seem_to_be alittle out_of_the common," he remarked, calmly ."Would you mind reading it to_me aloud ? "

this_is_the letter which I_read to him ----

"MY dear_Mr .SHERLOCK HOLMES, -- " there_has_been abad business during the night at 3, Lauriston Gardens, off the Brixton Road .Our man on_the beat saw alight there about two in_the morning, and as_the house was an empty one, suspected that something was amiss . he_found the door open, and in_the front room, which_is bare of furniture, discovered the body of agentleman, well dressed, and having cards in_his pocket bearing the name of `Enoch J .Drebber, Cleveland, Ohio, U .S .a. ' There had_been no robbery, nor is_there any evidence as_to how the man met his death . there_are marks of blood in_the room, but there_is no wound upon his person . we_are at aloss as_to how he_came into_the empty house; indeed, the whole affair is apuzzler . if_you_can come round to_the house any_time before twelve, you_will_find me there . I_have left everything in statu quo until I hear_from_you . if_you_are unable to_come I_shall give_you fuller details, and would esteem it agreat kindness if_you_would favour me with your opinion .Yours faithfully, "TOBIAS GREGSON ."

"Gregson is_the smartest of_the Scotland Yarders," my friend remarked; "he and Lestrade are the pick of abad lot . they_are both quick and energetic, but conventional -- shockingly so . they_have their knives into one another, too . they_are as jealous as apair of professional beauties . there_will_be some fun over this_case if_they_are both put upon_the scent ."

i_was amazed at_the calm way in_which he rippled on ."Surely there_is not amoment to_be lost," I cried, "shall I go and order you acab ? "

"I'm not sure about whether I_shall go . I_am the most incurably lazy devil that ever stood in shoe leather -- that_is, when_the fit is on me, for I_can_be spry enough at times ."

"Why, it_is just such achance as you_have_been longing for ."

"My dear fellow, what does it matter to_me .Supposing I unravel the whole matter, you_may_be_sure that Gregson, Lestrade, and Co .will pocket all the credit .That comes of being an unofficial personage ."

"But he begs you to help him ."

"Yes . he_knows that I_am his superior, and acknowledges it to_me; but he_would cut his tongue out before he_would own it to any third person .However, we_may as_well go and_have alook . I_shall work it out on my own hook . I_may_have alaugh at them if I_have nothing else .Come on ! "

He hustled on_his overcoat, and bustled about in away that showed that an energetic fit had superseded the apathetic one .

"Get your hat," he_said .

"You wish me to_come ? "

"Yes, if_you_have nothing better to_do ." aminute later we were both in ahansom, driving furiously for_the Brixton Road .

it_was afoggy, cloudy morning, and adun-coloured veil hung over the house-tops, looking like the reflection of_the mud-coloured streets beneath .My companion was in_the best of spirits, and prattled away about Cremona fiddles, and_the difference between aStradivarius and an Amati .As for_myself, i_was silent, for_the dull weather and_the melancholy business upon_which we were engaged, depressed my spirits .

"You don't seem to_give much thought to_the matter in hand," I_said at last, interrupting Holmes' musical disquisition .

"No data yet," he answered ." it_is acapital mistake to theorize before_you have all the evidence .It biases the judgment ."

" you_will_have your data soon," I remarked, pointing with my finger; " this_is_the Brixton Road, and that_is_the house, if I_am not very_much mistaken ."

"So it_is .Stop, driver, stop ! " We were still ahundred yards or so from_it, but he insisted upon our alighting, and we finished our journey upon foot .

Number 3, Lauriston Gardens wore an ill-omened and minatory look . it_was one of four which stood back some little way from_the street, two being occupied and two empty .The latter looked out with three tiers of vacant melancholy windows, which were blank and dreary, save that here and there a"To Let" card had developed like acataract upon_the bleared panes .asmall garden sprinkled over with ascattered eruption of sickly plants separated each of_these houses from_the street, and was traversed by anarrow pathway, yellowish in colour, and consisting apparently of amixture of clay and of gravel .The whole place was very sloppy from_the rain which had fallen through_the night .The garden was bounded by athree-foot brick wall with afringe of wood rails upon_the top, and against this wall was leaning astalwart police constable, surrounded by asmall knot of loafers, who craned their necks and strained their eyes in_the vain hope of catching some glimpse of_the proceedings within .

I had imagined that Sherlock Holmes would at once have hurried into_the house and plunged into astudy of_the mystery .Nothing appeared to_be further from_his intention .With an air of nonchalance which, under the circumstances, seemed to_me to border upon affectation, he lounged up and down the pavement, and gazed vacantly at_the ground, the sky, the opposite houses and_the line of railings .Having finished his scrutiny, he proceeded slowly down the path, or rather down the fringe of grass which flanked the path, keeping his eyes riveted upon_the ground .Twice he stopped, and once I_saw him smile, and heard him utter an exclamation of satisfaction .There were many marks of footsteps upon_the wet clayey soil, but since_the police had_been coming and going over it, i_was unable to_see how my companion could hope to learn anything from_it .Still I had had such extraordinary evidence of_the quickness of_his perceptive faculties, that I had no_doubt that he could_see agreat deal which_was hidden from me .

at_the door of_the house we were met by atall, white-faced, flaxen-haired man, with anotebook in_his hand, who rushed forward and wrung my companion's hand with effusion ." it_is indeed kind of you to_come," he_said, " I_have_had everything left untouched ."

"Except that ! " my friend answered, pointing at_the pathway ."If aherd of buffaloes had passed along there could_not_be agreater mess . no_doubt, however, you had drawn your own conclusions, Gregson, before_you permitted this ."

" I_have_had so_much to_do inside the house," the detective said evasively ."My colleague, Mr Lestrade, is here .I had relied upon him to look after_this ."

Holmes glanced at me and raised his eyebrows sardonically ."With two such men as yourself and Lestrade upon_the ground, there will_not_be much for
