Fable by Edgar Allan Poe
ALCMAN
The mountain pinnacles slumber; valleys, crags and caves are silent

"LISTEN
," said the Demon as he placed his hand upon my head
"The region
I speak is
dreary region in Libya,
borders
river Zaire
And
no quiet there, nor silence

"The waters
river have
saffron and sickly hue;
flow not onwards
sea, but palpitate forever and forever beneath the red eye
sun with
tumultuous and convulsive motion
For many miles on either side
river's oozy bed is
pale desert of gigantic water-lilies
They sigh one unto the other
solitude, and stretch towards the heaven their long and ghastly necks, and nod to and fro their everlasting heads
And
an indistinct murmur which cometh out from among them like the rushing of subterrene water
sigh one unto the other

"But
boundary
realm -- the boundary
dark, horrible, lofty forest
There, like the waves
Hebrides, the low underwood is agitated continually
But
no wind
heaven
tall primeval trees rock eternally hither and thither with
crashing and mighty sound
And from their high summits, one by one, drop everlasting dews
And
roots strange poisonous flowers lie writhing in perturbed slumber
And overhead, with
rustling and loud noise, the gray clouds rush westwardly forever, until they roll,
cataract, over the fiery wall
horizon
But
no wind
heaven
And
shores
river Zaire
neither quiet nor silence

"
night,
rain fell; and falling,
rain, but, having fallen,
blood
And I stood
morass
tall
rain fell upon my head --
lilies sighed one unto the other
solemnity
desolation

"And, all at once, the moon arose
thin ghastly mist, and was crimson in color
And mine eyes fell upon
huge gray rock which stood
shore
river, and was lighted
light
moon
rock was gray, and ghastly, and tall, --
rock was gray
Upon its front were characters engraven
stone; and I walked
morass of water-lilies, until
close unto the shore, that
read the characters
stone
But
decypher them
And
going back
morass,
moon shone with
fuller red, and I turned and looked again
rock, and
characters; --
characters were DESOLATION

"And I looked upwards, and there stood
man
summit
rock; and I hid myself
water-lilies that
discover the actions
man
man was tall and stately in form, and was wrapped up
shoulders
feet
toga of old Rome
outlines
figure were indistinct -- but his features were the features of
deity;
mantle
night, and
mist, and
moon, and
dew, had left uncovered the features
face
brow was lofty with thought,
eye wild with care; and,
few furrows upon his cheek
the fables of sorrow, and weariness, and disgust with mankind, and
longing after solitude

"
man sat
rock, and leaned his head upon his hand, and looked out
desolation
He looked down
low unquiet shrubbery, and up
tall primeval trees, and up higher
rustling heaven, and
crimson moon
And I lay close within shelter
lilies, and observed the actions
man
man trembled
solitude; -- but the night waned, and he sat
rock

"
man turned his attention
heaven, and looked out
dreary river Zaire, and
yellow ghastly waters, and
pale legions
water-lilies
man listened
sighs
water-lilies, and
murmur that came up from among them
And I lay close within my covert and observed the actions
man
man trembled
solitude; -- but the night waned and he sat
rock

"Then I went down
recesses
morass, and waded afar in
wilderness
lilies, and called unto the hippopotami which dwelt
fens
recesses
morass
hippopotami heard my call, and came,
behemoth, unto the foot
rock, and roared loudly and fearfully beneath the moon
And I lay close within my covert and observed the actions
man
man trembled
solitude; -- but the night waned and he sat
rock

"Then I cursed the elements
curse of tumult; and
frightful tempest gathered
heaven where, before, there
no wind
heaven became livid
violence
tempest --
rain beat
head
man --
floods
river came down --
river was tormented into foam --
water-lilies shrieked within their beds --
forest crumbled
wind --
thunder rolled --
lightning fell --
rock rocked to its foundation
And I lay close within my covert and observed the actions
man
man trembled
solitude; -- but the night waned and he sat
rock

"Then I grew angry and cursed,
curse of silence, the river,
lilies,
wind,
forest,
heaven,
thunder,
sighs
water-lilies
became accursed, and were still
moon ceased to totter up its pathway to heaven --
thunder died away --
lightning
flash --
clouds hung motionless --
waters sunk
level and remained --
trees ceased to rock --
water-lilies sighed no more --
murmur was heard no longer from among them, nor any shadow of sound
vast illimitable desert
And I looked
characters
rock,
were changed; --
characters were SILENCE

"And mine eyes fell
countenance
man,
countenance was wan with terror
And, hurriedly, he raised his head
hand, and stood forth
rock and listened
But
no voice
vast illimitable desert,
characters
rock were SILENCE
man shuddered, and turned his face away, and fled afar off, in haste,
I beheld him no more
"
Now
fine tales

Magi --
iron-bound, melancholy volumes
Magi
Therein,
, are glorious histories
Heaven, and
Earth, and
mighty sea -- and
Genii that over-ruled the sea,
earth,
lofty heaven
much lore too
sayings which were said
Sybils; and holy, holy things were heard of old
dim leaves that trembled around Dodona -- but, as Allah liveth, that fable which the Demon told me as he sat by my side
shadow
tomb, I hold
the most wonderful of all ! And
Demon made an end
story, he fell back
cavity
tomb and laughed
And
laugh
Demon, and he cursed me because
laugh
lynx which dwelleth forever
tomb, came out therefrom, and lay down
