to_keep you waiting, Mr Holmes . I_can_see that you_are bored to death with_the whole affair .Well, he has confessed, all right .Come in here, MacPherson .Let these gentlemen hear of your most inexcusable conduct ."

The big constable, very hot and penitent, sidled into_the room .

"I meant no harm, sir, I'm sure .The young woman came to_the door last evening -- mistook the house, she did .And then we got talking .It's lonesome, when_you're on duty here all day ."

"Well, what happened then ? "

"She wanted to_see where the crime was_done -- had read about_it in_the papers, she said .She was avery respectable, well-spoken young woman, sir, and I_saw no harm in letting her have apeep .When she saw that mark on_the carpet, down she dropped on_the floor, and lay as_if she were dead .I ran to_the back and got some water, but I_could_not bring her to .Then I went round the corner to_the Ivy Plant for some brandy, and by_the_time I had brought it back the young woman had recovered and was off -- ashamed of herself, I dare say, and dared not face me ."

"How about moving that drugget ? "

"Well, sir, it_was abit rumpled, certainly, when I_came back . you_see, she fell on_it, and it lies on apolished floor with nothing to_keep it in place .I straightened it out afterwards ."

"It's alesson to_you that you_can't deceive me, Constable MacPherson," said Lestrade, with dignity ." no_doubt you thought that your breach of duty could never be discovered, and yet amere glance at_that drugget was enough to_convince me that someone had_been admitted to_the room .It's lucky for_you, my man, that nothing is missing, or you_would find yourself in Queer Street .I'm sorry to_have called you down over such apetty business, Mr Holmes, but i_thought the point of_the second stain not corresponding with_the first would interest you ."

"Certainly, it_was most interesting . has_this woman only been here once, constable ? "

"Yes, sir, only once ."

"Who was she ? "

"Don't know the name, sir .Was answering an advertisement about type-writing, and came to_the wrong number -- very pleasant, genteel young woman, sir ."

"Tall ? Handsome ? "

"Yes, sir; she was awell-grown young woman .I suppose you_might say she was handsome .Perhaps some would say she was very handsome .`Oh, officer, do let me have apeep ! ' says she .She had pretty, coaxing ways, as_you_might say, and i_thought there_was no harm in letting her just put her head through_the door ."

"How was she dressed ? "

"Quiet, sir -- along mantle down to her feet ."

"What time was_it ? "

" it_was just growing dusk at_the_time .They were lighting the lamps as I_came back with_the brandy ."

" very_good," said Holmes ."Come, Watson, i_think that we_have more important work elsewhere ."

as_we left the house Lestrade remained in_the front room, while the repentant constable opened the door to let_us out .Holmes turned on_the step and held up something in_his hand .The constable stared intently .

"Good Lord, sir ! " he cried, with amazement on_his face .Holmes put his finger on_his lips, replaced his hand in_his breast-pocket, and burst out laughing as_we turned down the street ."Excellent ! " said he ."Come, friend Watson, the curtain rings up for_the_last act . you_will_be relieved to hear that there_will_be no war, that_the Right Honourable Trelawney Hope will suffer no set-back in_his brilliant career, that_the indiscreet Sovereign will receive no punishment for_his indiscretion, that_the Prime Minister will_have no European complication to deal with, and_that with alittle tact and management upon our part nobody will_be apenny the worse for what might_have_been avery ugly incident ."

My mind filled with admiration for_this extraordinary man .

" you_have solved it ! " I cried .

"Hardly that, Watson . there_are some points which are as dark as ever .But we_have so_much that_it_will_be our own fault if_we_cannot get the rest . we_will go straight to Whitehall Terrace and bring the matter to ahead ."

When we arrived at_the residence of_the European Secretary it_was for Lady Hilda Trelawney hope_that Sherlock Holmes inquired .We were shown into_the morning-room .

" Mr Holmes ! " said the lady, and her face was pink with her indignation, " this_is surely most unfair and ungenerous upon your part .I desired, as I_have explained, to_keep my visit to_you asecret, lest my husband should think that i_was intruding into his affairs .And yet you compromise me by coming here and so showing that_there_are business relations between_us ."

"Unfortunately, madam, I had no possible alternative . I_have_been commissioned to recover this immensely important paper . I_must therefore ask_you, madam, to_be kind enough to_place it in my hands ."

The lady sprang to her feet, with_the colour all dashed in an instant from her beautiful face .Her eyes glazed -- she tottered -- i_thought that she_would faint .Then with agrand effort she rallied from_the shock, and asupreme astonishment and indignation chased every_other expression from her features .

"You -- you insult me, Mr Holmes ."

"Come, come, madam, it_is useless .Give up the letter ."

She darted to_the bell .

"The butler shall show you out ."

" do_not ring, Lady Hilda . if_you_do, then all my earnest efforts to avoid ascandal will_be frustrated .Give up the letter and all will_be set right . if_you_will work with me I_can arrange everything . if_you work against me I_must expose you ."

She stood grandly defiant, aqueenly figure, her eyes fixed upon his as_if she_would read his very soul .Her hand was on_the bell, but she had forborne to ring it .

" you_are trying to frighten me . it_is_not avery manly thing, Mr Holmes, to_come here and browbeat awoman .You say that you_know something . what_is it that you_know ? "

"Pray sit down, madam . you_will hurt yourself there if_you fall . i_will_not speak until you sit down . thank_you ."

"I give_you five minutes, Mr Holmes ."

"One is enough, Lady Hilda . I_know of your visit to Eduardo Lucas, of your giving him this document, of your ingenious return to_the room last night, and of_the manner in_which_you took the letter from_the hiding-place under the carpet ."

She stared at him with an ashen face and gulped twice before she_could speak .

" you_are mad, Mr Holmes -- you_are mad ! " she cried, at last .

He drew asmall piece of cardboard from_his pocket .It was_the face of awoman cut out of aportrait .

" I_have carried this because i_thought it might_be useful," said he ."The policeman has recognised it ."

She gave agasp and her head dropped back in_the chair .

"Come, Lady Hilda . you_have the letter .The matter may still be adjusted . I_have no desire to bring trouble to_you .My duty ends when I_have returned the lost letter to your husband .Take my advice and be frank with me; it_is your only chance ."

Her courage was admirable .Even now she_would not own defeat .

"I tell you again, Mr Holmes, that you_are under some absurd illusion ."

Holmes rose from_his chair .

" I_am sorry for_you, Lady Hilda . I_have_done my best for_you; I_can_see that_it_is all in vain ."

He rang the bell .The butler entered .

"Is Mr Trelawney Hope at home ? "

" he_will_be home, sir, at aquarter to one ."

Holmes glanced at his watch .

"Still aquarter of an hour," said he ." very_good, I_shall wait ."

The butler had hardly closed the door behind him when Lady Hilda was down on her knees at Holmes's feet, her hands out-stretched, her beautiful face upturned and wet with her tears .

"Oh, spare me, Mr Holmes ! Spare me ! " she pleaded, in afrenzy of supplication ."For Heaven's sake, don't tell him ! I love him so ! i_would_not bring one shadow on_his life, and this I_know would break his noble heart ."

Holmes raised the lady ." I_am thankful, madam, that you_have come to your senses even at_this last moment ! there_is not an instant to lose .Where is_the letter ? "

She darted across to awriting-desk, unlocked it, and drew out along blue envelope .

"Here it_is, Mr Holmes .Would to Heaven I had never seen it ! "

"How can we return it ? " Holmes muttered ."Quick, quick, we_must think of some way ! Where is_the despatch-box ? "

"Still in_his bedroom ."

"What astroke of luck ! Quick, madam, bring it here ! "

amoment later she had appeared with ared flat box in her hand .

"How did you open it before ? you_have aduplicate key ? Yes, of_course
