.

"What do_you make of_that ? " asked Holmes .

"The name of_the maker, no_doubt; or his monogram, rather ."

"Not at all .The 'G' with_the small 't' stands for 'Gesellschaft,' which_is the German for 'Company .' it_is acustomary contraction like our 'Co .' 'P,' of_course, stands for 'Papier .' Now for_the 'Eg .' let_us glance at our Continental Gazetteer ." he_took down aheavy brown volume from_his shelves ."Eglow, Eglonitz--here we_are, Egria . it_is in aGerman-speaking country--in Bohemia, not far from Carlsbad .'Remarkable as being the scene of_the death of Wallenstein, and for its numerous glass-factories and paper-mills .' Ha, ha, my boy, what do_you make of_that ? " His eyes sparkled, and he sent up agreat blue triumphant cloud from_his cigarette .

"The paper was_made in Bohemia," I_said .

"Precisely . and_the man who wrote the note is aGerman . do_you note the peculiar construction of_the sentence--'This account of you we_have from all quarters received .' aFrenchman or Russian could_not have written that . it_is_the German who_is so uncourteous to_his verbs .It only remains, therefore, to discover what_is wanted by_this German who writes upon Bohemian paper and prefers wearing amask to showing his face .And here he comes, if I_am not mistaken, to resolve all our doubts ."

As he spoke there_was the sharp sound of horses' hoofs and grating wheels against the curb, followed by asharp pull at_the bell .Holmes whistled .

"A pair, by_the sound," said he ."Yes," he continued, glancing out_of_the window ."A nice little brougham and apair of beauties .ahundred and fifty guineas apiece .There's money in this_case, Watson, if_there_is nothing else ."

" i_think that I had better go, Holmes ."

"Not abit, Doctor .Stay where you_are . I_am lost without my Boswell .And this promises to_be interesting .It would_be apity to miss it ."

"But your client--"

"Never mind him . I_may want your help, and so may he .Here he comes .Sit down in_that armchair, Doctor, and give_us your best attention ."

aslow and heavy step, which had_been heard upon_the stairs and in_the passage, paused immediately outside the door .Then there_was aloud and authoritative tap .

"Come in ! " said Holmes .

aman entered who_could hardly have_been less_than six feet six inches in height, with_the chest and limbs of aHercules .His dress was rich with arichness which would, in England, be looked upon as akin to bad taste .Heavy bands of astrakhan were slashed across the sleeves and fronts of_his double-breasted coat, while the deep blue cloak which_was thrown over his shoulders was lined with flame-colored silk and secured at_the neck with abrooch which consisted of asingle flaming beryl .Boots which extended halfway up his calves, and which were trimmed at_the tops with rich brown fur, completed the impression of barbaric opulence which_was suggested by his whole appearance .He carried abroad-brimmed hat in_his hand, while he wore across the upper part of_his face, extending down past the cheekbones, ablack vizard mask, which he had apparently adjusted that very moment, for_his hand was still raised to_it as he entered . from_the lower part of_the face he appeared to_be aman of strong character, with athick, hanging lip, and along, straight chin suggestive of resolution pushed to_the length of obstinacy .

"You had my note ? " he asked with adeep harsh voice and astrongly marked German accent ." i_told you that i_would call ." He looked from one to_the other of us, as_if uncertain which to address .

"Pray take aseat," said Holmes ." this_is my friend and colleague, Dr .Watson, who_is occasionally good enough to help me in my cases .Whom have I the honor to address ? "

" you_may address me as_the Count Von Kramm, aBohemian nobleman .I understand that_this gentleman, your friend, is aman of honor and discretion, whom I_may trust with amatter of_the most extreme importance . if_not, i_should much prefer to communicate with_you alone ."

I rose to_go, but Holmes caught me by_the wrist and pushed me back into my chair ." it_is both, or none," said he ." you_may say before this gentleman anything which you_may say to_me ."

The Count shrugged his broad shoulders ."Then I_must begin," said he, "by binding you both to absolute secrecy for two years; at_the end of_that_time the matter will_be of no importance .At present it_is_not too_much to_say that_it_is of_such weight it may_have an influence upon European history ."

"I promise," said Holmes .

"And I ."

" you_will excuse this mask," continued our strange visitor ."The august person who employs me wishes his agent to_be unknown to_you, and I_may confess at once that_the title by_which I_have just called myself is_not exactly my own ."

" i_was aware of it," said Holmes drily .

"The circumstances are of great delicacy, and every precaution has_to be taken to quench what might grow to_be an immense scandal and seriously compromise one_of_the reigning families of Europe . to_speak plainly, the matter implicates the great House of Ormstein, hereditary kings of Bohemia ."

" i_was also aware of_that," murmured Holmes, settling himself down in_his armchair and closing his eyes .

Our visitor glanced with some apparent surprise at_the languid, lounging figure of_the man who had_been no_doubt depicted to him as_the most incisive reasoner and most energetic agent in Europe .Holmes slowly reopened his eyes and looked impatiently at his gigantic client .

"If your Majesty would condescend to state your case," he remarked, " i_should_be better able to advise you ."

The man sprang from_his chair and paced up and down the room in uncontrollable agitation .Then, with agesture of desperation, he tore the mask from_his face and hurled it upon_the ground ." you_are right," he cried; " I_am the King .Why should I attempt to conceal it ? "

"Why, indeed ? " murmured Holmes ."Your Majesty had_not spoken before i_was aware that i_was addressing Wilhelm Gottsreich Sigismond von Ormstein, Grand Duke of Cassel-Felstein, and hereditary King of Bohemia ."

"But you_can understand," said our strange visitor, sitting down once more and passing his hand over his high white forehead, " you_can understand that I_am not accustomed to doing such business in my own person .Yet the matter was so delicate that I_could_not confide it to an agent without putting myself in_his power . I_have come incognito from Prague for_the_purpose of consulting you ."

"Then, pray consult," said Holmes, shutting his eyes once more .

"The facts are briefly these: Some five years_ago, during alengthy visit to Warsaw, I_made the acquaintance of_the wellknown adventuress, Irene Adler .The name is no_doubt farmiliar to_you ."

"Kindly look her up in my index, Doctor," murmured Holmes without opening his eyes .For many years he had adopted asystem of docketing all paragraphs concerning men and things, so that_it_was difficult to name asubject or aperson on_which he_could_not at once furnish information .In this_case I_found her biography sandwiched in between that of aHebrew rabbi and_that of astaff-commander who had written amonograph upon_the deep-sea fishes .

"Let me see ! " said Holmes ."Hum ! Born in New Jersey in_the year 1858 .Contralto--hum ! La Scala, hum ! Prima donna Imperial Opera of Warsaw--yes ! Retired from operatic stage--ha ! Living in London--quite so ! Your Majesty, as I understand, became entangled with_this young person, wrote her some compromising letters, and_is now desirous of getting those letters back ."

"Precisely so .But how--"

"Was there asecret marriage ? "

"None ."

"No legal papers or certificates ? "

"None ."

"Then I fail to_follow your Majesty . if_this young person should produce her letters for blackmailing or other purposes, how is she to_prove their authenticity ? "

" there_is the writing ."

"Pooh, pooh ! Forgery ."

"My private note-paper ."

"Stolen ."

"My own seal ."

"Imitated ."

"My photograph ."

"Bought ."

"We were both in_the photograph ."

"Oh, dear ! that_is very bad ! Your Majesty has indeed committed an indiscretion ."

" i_was mad--insane ."

" you_have compromised yourself seriously ."
