adrawer of_his cabinet and drew out asmall book covered with blue leather .Looking through_the pages he_found the recipe he_wanted and said: " I_must_have agill of water from adark well ."

"What kind of awell is_that, sir ? " asked the boy .

"One where the light of day never penetrates .The water must_be put in agold bottle and brought to_me without any light ever reaching it ."

"I'll get the water from_the dark well," said Ojo .

"Then I_must_have three hairs from_the tip of aWoozy's tail, and adrop of oil from alive man's body ."

Ojo looked grave at_this .

" what_is aWoozy, please ? " he inquired .

"Some sort of an animal .I've never seen one, so I_can't describe it," replied the Magician .

"If I_can find aWoozy, I'll get the hairs from its tail," said Ojo ."But is_there ever any oil in aman's body ? "

The Magician looked in_the book again, to_make sure .

"That's what the recipe calls for," he replied, "and of_course we_must get everything that_is called for, or the charm won't work .The book doesn't say 'blood'; it says 'oil,' and there_must_be oil somewhere in alive man's body or the book wouldn't ask for_it ."

"All right," returned Ojo, trying not to_feel discouraged; "I'll try to_find it ."

The Magician looked at_the little Munchkin boy in adoubtful way and said:

"All this_will mean along journey for_you; perhaps several long journeys; for you_must search through several of_the different countries of Oz in_order to_get the things I_need ."

" I_know it, sir; but I_must do my best to save Unc Nunkie ."

"And also my poor wife Margolotte . if_you save one you_will save the other, for both stand there together and_the same compound will restore them both to life . do_the best you_can, Ojo, and while you_are gone I_shall begin the six years job of making anew batch of_the Powder of Life .Then, if you_should unluckily fail to secure any_one_of_the things needed, i_will_have lost no time .But if_you succeed you_must return here as quickly as_you_can, and that_will save me much tiresome stirring of four kettles with both feet and both hands ."

" i_will start on my journey at once, sir," said the boy .

" and_I_will go with_you," declared the Patchwork Girl .

"No, no ! " exclaimed the Magician ." you_have no right to leave this house . you_are only aservant and have_not_been discharged ."

Scraps, who had_been dancing up and down the room, stopped and looked at him .

" what_is aservant ? " she asked .

"One who serves .A--a sort of slave," he explained .

" very_well," said the Patchwork Girl, "I'm going to_serve_you and your wife by helping Ojo find the things you_need . you_need alot, you_know, such as are_not easily found ."

" it_is true," sighed Dr .Pipt ." I_am well aware that Ojo has undertaken aserious task ."

Scraps laughed, and resuming her dance she said:

"Here's ajob for aboy of brains: adrop of oil from alive man's veins; asix-leaved clover; three nice hairs From aWoozy's tail, the book declares Are needed for_the magic spell, And water from apitch-dark well .The yellow wing of abutterfly to_find must Ojo also try, And if he gets them without harm, Doc Pipt will make_the magic charm; But if he doesn't get 'em, Unc Will always stand amarble chunk ."

The Magician looked at her thoughtfully .

"Poor Margolotte must_have given you some_of_the quality of poesy, by mistake," he_said ."And, if_that is true, I didn't make a very_good article when I prepared it, or else you got an overdose or an underdose .However, I believe I_shall let you go with Ojo, for_my poor wife will not need your services until she_is restored to life .Also i_think you_may_be_able to help the boy, for your head seems to contain some thoughts I_did_not expect to_find in_it .But be very careful of yourself, for_you're asouvenir of_my dear Margolotte .Try not to_get ripped, or your stuffing may fall out .One of your eyes seems loose, and you_may_have to sew it on tighter . if_you talk too_much you'll wear out your scarlet plush tongue, which ought_to_have been hemmed on_the edges .And remember you belong to_me and must return here as_soon_as your mission is accomplished ."

"I'm going with Scraps and Ojo," announced the Glass Cat .

" you_can't," said the Magician .

" why_not ? "

"You'd get broken in no time, and you couldn't be abit of use to_the boy and_the Patchwork Girl ."

"I beg to differ with_you," returned the cat, in ahaughty tone ."Three heads are better than two, and my pink brains are beautiful .You can_see 'em work ."

"Well, go along," said the Magician, irritably ."You're only an annoyance, anyhow, and I'm glad to_get rid of you ."

" thank_you_for nothing, then," answered the cat, stiffly .

Dr .Pipt took asmall basket from acupboard and packed several things in_it .Then he handed it to Ojo .

" here_is some food and abundle of charms," he_said ." it_is all I_can give_you, but I_am_sure you_will_find friends on_your journey who_will assist you in your search .Take care of_the Patchwork Girl and bring her safely back, for she ought to_prove useful to my wife .As for_the Glass Cat-- properly named Bungle--if she bothers you I now give_you my permission to break her in two, for she_is_not respectful and does_not obey me . I_made amistake in giving her the pink brains, you_see ."

Then Ojo went to Unc Nunkie and kissed the old man's marble face very tenderly .

"I'm going to_try to save you, Unc," he_said, just as if_the marble image could hear him; and then he shook the crooked hand of_the Crooked Magician, who was already busy hanging the four kettles in_the fireplace, and picking up his basket left the house .

The Patchwork Girl followed him, and after them came the Glass Cat .

Chapter Six

The Journey

Ojo had never traveled before and so he only knew that_the path down the mountainside led into_the open Munchkin Country, where large numbers of people dwelt .Scraps was quite new and not supposed to_know anything of_the Land of Oz, while the Glass Cat admitted she had never wandered very far away from_the Magician's house . there_was only_one path before them, at_the beginning, so they_could_not miss their way, and for atime they walked through_the thick forest in silent thought, each_one impressed with_the importance of_the adventure they had undertaken .

Suddenly the Patchwork Girl laughed . it_was funny to_see her laugh, because her cheeks wrinkled up, her nose tipped, her silver button eyes twinkled and her mouth curled at_the corners in acomical way .

"Has something pleased you ? " asked Ojo, who was feeling solemn and joyless through thinking upon his uncle's sad fate .

"Yes," she answered ."Your world pleases me, for_it's aqueer world, and life in it_is queerer still .Here am I, made from an old bedquilt and intended to_be aslave to Margolotte, rendered free as air by an accident that none of you_could foresee . I_am enjoying life and seeing the world, while the woman who_made me is standing helpless as ablock of wood . if_that isn't funny enough to laugh at, I don't know what_is ."

"You're not seeing much of_the world yet, my poor, innocent Scraps," remarked the Cat ."The world doesn't consist wholly of_the trees that_are on all sides of us ."

"But they're part of it; and aren't they pretty trees ? " returned Scraps, bobbing her head until her brown yarn curls fluttered in_the breeze ."Growing between_them I_can_see lovely ferns and wild-flowers, and soft green mosses . if_the rest of your world is half as beautiful I_shall_be_glad I'm alive ."

"I don't know what the rest of_the world is like, I'm sure," said the cat; "but I mean to_find out ."

" I_have never been out_of_the forest," Ojo added; "but to_me the trees are gloomy and sad and_the wild-flowers seem lonesome .It must_be nicer where there_are no trees and there_is room for lots of people to live together ."

"I wonder if any of_the people we_shall meet will_be as splendid as I_am," said the Patchwork Girl ."All I_have_seen, so_far, have pale, colorless skins and clothes as blue
