that_the French windows of_his bedroom ( which_is on_the ground floor) were found to_be open, that there were marks as_if some bulky object had_been dragged across to_the wood-pile, and, finally, it_is asserted that charred remains have_been found among_the charcoal ashes of_the fire .The police theory is_that amost sensational crime has_been committed, that_the victim was clubbed to death in_his own bedroom, his papers rifled, and_his dead body dragged across to_the wood-stack, which_was then ignited so as_to hide all traces of_the crime .The conduct of_the criminal investigation has_been left in_the experienced hands of Inspector Lestrade, of Scotland Yard, who_is following up the clues with_his accustomed energy and sagacity .

Sherlock Holmes listened with closed eyes and finger-tips together to_this remarkable account .

"The case has certainly some points of interest," said he, in_his languid fashion ."May I ask, in_the first place, Mr McFarlane, how it is_that you_are still at liberty, since there appears to_be enough evidence to justify your arrest ? "

"I live at Torrington Lodge, Blackheath, with my parents, Mr Holmes; but last night, having to_do business very late with Mr Jonas Oldacre, I stayed at an hotel in Norwood, and came to my business from there . I_knew nothing of_this affair until i_was in_the train, when I_read what you_have just heard .I at once saw the horrible danger of_my position, and I hurried to_put the case into your hands . I_have no_doubt that I should_have_been arrested either at my City office or at my home .aman followed me from London Bridge Station, and I_have no_doubt --- Great Heaven, what is_that ? "

it_was aclang of_the bell, followed instantly by heavy steps upon_the stair .amoment later our old friend Lestrade appeared in_the doorway .Over his shoulder I caught aglimpse of one_or_two uniformed policemen outside .

" Mr John Hector McFarlane ? " said Lestrade .

Our unfortunate client rose with aghastly face .

"I arrest you for_the wilful murder of Mr Jonas Oldacre, of Lower Norwood ."

McFarlane turned to_us with agesture of despair, and sank into his chair once more like one who_is crushed .

"One moment, Lestrade," said Holmes ."Half an hour more or less can make no difference to_you, and_the gentleman was about to give_us an account of_this very interesting affair, which might aid us in clearing it up ."

" i_think there_will_be no difficulty in clearing it up," said Lestrade, grimly .

"None the less, with your permission, i_should_be much interested to hear his account ."

"Well, Mr Holmes, it_is difficult for_me to refuse you anything, for you_have_been of use to_the force once_or_twice in_the_past, and we owe you agood turn at Scotland Yard," said Lestrade ." at_the same time I_must remain with my prisoner, and I_am bound to warn him that anything he_may say will appear in evidence against him ."

" i_wish nothing better," said our client ."All I ask is_that you_should hear and recognise the absolute truth ."

Lestrade looked at his watch ."I'll give_you half an hour," said he .

" I_must explain first," said McFarlane, "that I_knew nothing of Mr Jonas Oldacre .His name was familiar to_me, for many years_ago my parents were acquainted with_him, but they drifted apart . i_was very_much surprised, therefore, when yesterday, about three o'clock in_the afternoon, he walked into my office in_the City .But i_was still more astonished when he_told me the object of_his visit .He had in_his hand several sheets of anote-book, covered with scribbled writing -- here they_are -- and he laid them on my table .

"` here_is my will,' said he .` i_want you, Mr McFarlane, to cast it into proper legal shape . i_will sit here while you_do so .'

"I set myself to copy it, and you_can imagine my astonishment when I_found that, with some reservations, he had left all his property to_me . he_was astrange little, ferret-like man, with white eyelashes, and when I looked up at him I_found his keen grey eyes fixed upon me with an amused expression . I_could hardly believe my own senses as I_read the terms of_the will; but he explained that he_was abachelor with hardly any living relation, that he had known my parents in_his youth, and_that he had always heard of me as avery deserving young man, and was assured that his money would_be in worthy hands . of_course, I_could only stammer out my thanks .The will was duly finished, signed, and witnessed by my clerk . this_is it on_the blue paper, and these slips, as I_have explained, are the rough draft .Mr Jonas Oldacre then informed me that there were anumber of documents -- building leases, title-deeds, mortgages, scrip, and so forth -- which it_was necessary that I should_see and understand . he_said that his mind would_not_be easy until the whole thing was settled, and he begged me to_come out to_his house at Norwood that night, bringing the will with me, and to arrange matters .`Remember, my boy, not one word to your parents about_the affair until everything is settled . we_will keep it as alittle surprise for_them .' he_was very insistent upon_this point, and made me promise it faithfully .

" you_can imagine, Mr Holmes, that i_was not in ahumour to refuse him anything that he might ask . he_was my benefactor, and all my desire was to carry out his wishes in every particular . I_sent atelegram home, therefore, to_say that I had important business on hand, and that_it_was impossible for_me to_say how late I_might_be .Mr Oldacre had told me that he_would like me to_have supper with_him at nine, as he might_not_be home before_that hour .I had some difficulty in finding his house, however, and it_was nearly half-past before I reached it . I_found him ---"

"One moment ! " said Holmes ."Who opened the door ? "

"A middle-aged woman, who was, I suppose, his housekeeper ."

"And it_was she, I presume, who mentioned your_name ? "

"Exactly," said McFarlane .

"Pray proceed ."

McFarlane wiped his damp brow and then continued his narrative:--

" i_was shown by_this woman into asitting-room, where afrugal supper was laid out .Afterwards Mr Jonas Oldacre led me into his bedroom, in_which there stood aheavy safe .This he opened and took out amass of documents, which we went over together . it_was between eleven and twelve when we finished .He remarked that we_must not disturb the housekeeper .He showed me out through his own French window, which had_been open all this_time ."

" was_the blind down ? " asked Holmes .

" i_will_not_be sure, but I believe that_it_was only half down .Yes, I remember how he pulled it up in_order to swing open the window . I_could_not find my stick, and he_said, `Never mind, my boy; I_shall see a good_deal of you now, I_hope, and_I_will keep your stick until you come back to claim it .' I left him there, the safe open, and_the papers made up in packets upon_the table . it_was so late that I_could_not get back to Blackheath, so I spent the night at_the Anerley Arms, and I_knew nothing more until I_read of_this horrible affair in_the morning ."

"Anything more that you_would like to ask, Mr Holmes ? " said Lestrade, whose eyebrows had gone up once_or_twice during this remarkable explanation .

"Not until I_have_been to Blackheath ."

"You mean to Norwood," said Lestrade .

"Oh, yes; no_doubt that_is what I_must_have meant," said Holmes, with_his enigmatical smile .Lestrade had learned by more experiences than he_would care to acknowledge that that razor-like brain could cut through_that which_was impenetrable to him . I_saw him look curiously at my companion .

" i_think i_should like to_have aword with_you presently, Mr Sherlock Holmes," said he ."Now, Mr McFarlane, two of_my constables are at_the door and there_is afour-wheeler waiting ." The wretched young man arose, and with alast beseeching glance at us walked from_the room .The officers conducted him to_the cab, but Lestrade remained .

Holmes had picked up the pages which formed the rough draft of_the will, and was looking at them with_the keenest interest upon his face .

" there_are some points about_that document, Lestrade, are there not ? " said he, pushing them over .

The official looked at them with apuzzled expression .

" I_can read the first few lines, and these in_the middle of_the second page, and one_or_two at_the end .Those are as clear as print," said he; "but the writing in between is very bad, and there_are three places where I_cannot read it at all ."

"What do_you make of_that ? " said Holmes .

"Well, what
