. some_of_the general public were present, then ? "

"Oh, yes . it_is impossible to exclude them when_the church is open ."

"This gentleman was not one of your wife's friends ? "

"No, no; I call him agentleman by courtesy, but he_was quite acommon-looking person .I hardly noticed his appearance .But really i_think that we_are wandering rather far from_the point ."

"Lady St .Simon, then, returned from_the wedding in aless cheerful frame of mind than she had gone to_it .What did she do on re-entering her father's house ? "

" I_saw her in conversation with her maid ."

"And who_is her maid ? "

"Alice is her name . she_is an American and came from California with her ."

"A confidential servant ? "

"A little too_much so .It seemed to_me that her mistress allowed her to_take great liberties .Still, of_course, in America they look upon these things in adifferent way ."

"How long did she speak to_this Alice ? "

"Oh, a few_minutes .I had something else to_think of ."

" you_did_not overhear what they said ? "

"Lady St .Simon said something about 'jumping aclaim .' She was accustomed to use slang of_the kind . I_have no idea what she meant ."

"American slang is very expressive sometimes .And what did your wife do when she finished speaking to her maid ? "

"She walked into_the breakfast-room ."

" on_your arm ? "

"No, alone .She was very independent in little matters like that .Then, after we had sat down for ten minutes or so, she rose hurriedly, muttered some words of apology, and left the room .She never came back ."

"But this maid, Alice, as I understand, deposes that she went to her room, covered her bride's dress with along ulster, put on abonnet, and went out ."

"Quite so .And she was afterwards seen walking into Hyde Park in company with Flora Millar, awoman who_is now in custody, and who had already made adisturbance at Mr Doran's house that morning ."

"Ah, yes . i_should like afew particulars as_to_this young lady, and your relations to her ."

Lord St .Simon shrugged his shoulders and raised his eyebrows ." we_have_been on afriendly footing for_some_years-- I_may say on avery friendly footing .She used to_be at_the Allegro . I_have_not treated her ungenerously, and she had no just cause of complaint against me, but you_know what women are, Mr Holmes .Flora was adear little thing, but exceedingly hot-headed and devotedly attached to_me .She wrote me dreadful letters when she heard that i_was about to_be married, and, to_tell the truth, the reason why I had the marriage celebrated so quietly was_that I feared lest there_might_be ascandal in_the church .She came to Mr Doran's door just after we returned, and she endeavoured to push her way in, uttering very abusive expressions towards my wife, and even threatening her, but I had foreseen the possibility of something of_the sort, and I had two police fellows there in private clothes, who soon pushed her out again .She was quiet when she saw that there_was no good in making arow ."

"Did your wife hear all this ? "

"No, thank goodness, she did_not ."

"And she was seen walking with_this very woman afterwards ? "

"Yes . that_is what Mr Lestrade, of Scotland Yard, looks upon as so serious . it_is thought that Flora decoyed my wife out and laid some terrible trap for her ."

"Well, it_is apossible supposition ."

" you_think so, too ? "

" I_did_not_say aprobable one .But you_do_not yourself look upon_this as likely ? "

" I_do_not_think Flora would hurt afly ."

"Still, jealousy is astrange transformer of characters .Pray what_is your own theory as_to what took place ? "

"Well, really, I_came to seek atheory, not to propound one . I_have_given you all the facts .Since you ask me, however, I_may say that_it has occurred to_me as possible that_the excitement of_this affair, the consciousness that she had made so immense asocial stride, had the effect of causing some little nervous disturbance in my wife ."

"In short, that she had become suddenly deranged ? "

"Well, really, when I consider that she has turned her back-- i_will_not say upon me, but upon so_much that many have aspired to without success-- I_can hardly explain it in any_other fashion ."

"Well, certainly that_is also aconceivable hypothesis," said Holmes, smiling ."And now, Lord St .Simon, i_think that I_have nearly all my data .May I ask whether you were seated at_the breakfast-table so_that you_could_see out_of_the window ? "

"We could_see the other side of_the road and_the Park ."

"Quite so .Then I_do_not_think that I_need to detain you longer . I_shall communicate with_you ."

"Should you be fortunate enough to solve this problem," said our client, rising .

" I_have solved it ."

"Eh ? What was_that ? "

" I_say that I_have solved it ."

"Where, then, is my wife ? "

" that_is adetail which I_shall speedily supply ."

Lord St .Simon shook his head ." I_am afraid that_it_will take wiser heads than yours or mine," he remarked, and bowing in astately, old-fashioned manner he departed .

" it_is very_good of Lord St .Simon to honour my head by putting it on alevel with_his own," said Sherlock Holmes, laughing ." i_think that I_shall_have awhisky and soda and acigar after all this cross-questioning .I had formed my conclusions as_to_the case before our client came into_the room ."

"My dear Holmes ! "

" I_have notes of several similar cases, though none, as I remarked before, which were quite as prompt .My whole examination served to_turn my conjecture into acertainty .Circumstantial evidence is occasionally very convincing, as when_you find atrout in_the milk, to quote Thoreau's example ."

"But I_have heard all that you_have heard ."

"Without, however, the knowledge of pre-existing cases which serves me so_well . there_was aparallel instance in Aberdeen some_years back, and something on very_much the same lines at Munich the year after_the Franco-Prussian War . it_is one_of_these cases--but, hello, here_is Lestrade ! Good-afternoon, Lestrade ! you_will_find an extra tumbler upon_the sideboard, and there_are cigars in_the box ."

The official detective was attired in apea-jacket and cravat, which gave him adecidedly nautical appearance, and he carried ablack canvas bag in_his hand .With ashort greeting he seated himself and lit the cigar which had_been offered to him .

"What's up, then ? " asked Holmes with atwinkle in_his eye ."You look dissatisfied ."

"And I_feel dissatisfied .It is_this infernal St .Simon marriage case . I_can make neither head nor tail of_the business ."

"Really ! You surprise me ."

"Who ever heard of_such amixed affair ? Every clew seems to slip through my fingers . I_have_been at work upon it all day ."

"And very wet it seems to have_made you," said Holmes laying his hand upon_the arm of_the pea-jacket .

"Yes, I_have_been dragging the Serpentine ."

"In heaven's name, what for ? "

"In search of_the body of Lady St .Simon ."

Sherlock Holmes leaned back in_his chair and laughed heartily .

" have_you dragged the basin of Trafalgar Square fountain ? " he asked .

"Why ? What do_you_mean ? "

"Because you_have just as good achance of finding this lady in_the one as in_the other ."

Lestrade shot an angry glance at my companion ."I suppose you_know all about_it," he snarled .

"Well, I_have only just heard the facts, but my mind is made up ."

"Oh, indeed ! Then you_think that_the Serpentine plays no part in_the manner ? "

" i_think it very unlikely ."

"Then perhaps you_will kindly explain how it is_that we_found this in_it ? " He opened his bag as he spoke, and tumbled onto the floor awedding-dress of watered silk, apair of white satin shoes and abride's wreath and veil, all discoloured and soaked in water ."There," said he, putting anew wedding-ring upon_the top of_the pile ." there_is alittle nut for_you to crack, Master Holmes ."

"Oh, indeed ! " said my friend, blowing blue rings into_the air ."You dragged them from_the Serpentine ? "

"No .They were found floating near the margin by apark-keeper .They have_been identified as her clothes, and it seemed to_me that if_the clothes were there the body would_not_be far off ."

" by_the same brilliant reasoning, every man's body is_to_be found in_the neighbourhood of_his wardrobe .And pray what did you hope to arrive at through_this ? "

"At some evidence implicating Flora Millar in_the disappearance ."

" I_am afraid that you_will_find it difficult ."

" are_you, indeed, now ? " cried Lestrade with some bitterness ." I_am afraid, Holmes, that you_are_not very practical with your deductions and your inferences .You have_made two blunders in as_many minutes .This dress does implicate Miss Flora Millar ."

"And how ? "

" in_the dress is apocket .
