to_the Tin Woodman to save him; and_that good friend responded with renewed energy .His axe fairly flashed among_the Jackdaws, and fortunately the Gump began wildly waving the two wings remaining on_the left side of_its body .The flutter of_these great wings filled the Jackdaws with terror, and when_the Gump by its exertions freed itself from_the peg of rock on_which it hung, and sank flopping into_the nest, the alarm of_the birds knew no bounds and_they fled screaming over the mountains .

when_the last foe had disappeared, Tip crawled from under the sofas and assisted the Woggle-Bug to_follow him .

" we_are saved ! " shouted the boy, delightedly .

" we_are, indeed ! " responded the Educated Insect, fairly hugging the stiff head of_the Gump in_his joy ."and we owe it all to_the flopping of_the Thing, and_the good axe of_the Woodman ! "

221

"If I_am saved, get me out of here ! " called Jack; whose head was still beneath the sofas; and Tip managed to roll the pumpkin out and place it upon its neck again .He also set the Saw-Horse upright, and said to_it:

"We owe you many thanks for_the gallant fight you_made ."

"I really think we_have escaped very nicely," remarked the Tin Woodman, in atone of pride .

"Not so ! " exclaimed ahollow voice .

at_this they all turned in surprise to look at_the Scarecrow's head, which lay at_the back of_the nest .

" I_am completely ruined ! " declared the Scarecrow, as he noted their astonishment ."For where is_the straw that stuffs my body ? "

The awful question startled them all .They gazed around the nest with horror, for not avestige of straw remained .The

222 Jackdaws had stolen it to_the last wisp and flung it all into_the chasm that yawned for hundreds of feet beneath the nest .

"My poor, poor friend ! " said the Tin Woodman, taking up the Scarecrow's head and caressing it tenderly; "whoever could imagine you_would come to_this untimely end ? "

" I_did it to save my friends," returned the head; "and I_am_glad that I perished in so noble and unselfish amanner ."

"But why are_you all so despondent ? " inquired the Woggle-Bug ."The Scarecrow's clothing is still safe ."

"Yes," answered the Tin Woodman; "but our friend's clothes are useless without stuffing ."

" why_not stuff him with money ? " asked Tip .

"Money ! " they all cried, in an amazed chorus .

" to_be_sure," said the boy ." in_the bottom of_the nest are thousands of dollar bills -- and two-dollar bills -- and five-dollar bills -- and tens, and twenties, and fifties . there_are enough of_them to stuff adozen Scarecrows . why_not use the money ? "

The Tin Woodman began to_turn over the rubbish with_the handle of_his axe; and, sure enough, what they had first thought only worthless papers were found to_be all bills of various denominations,

223 which the mischievous Jackdaws had for years been engaged in stealing from_the villages and cities they visited .

there_was an immense fortune lying in_that inaccessible nest; and Tip's suggestion was, with_the Scarecrow's consent, quickly acted upon .

They selected all the newest and cleanest bills and assorted them into various piles .The Scarecrow's left leg and boot were stuffed with five- dollar bills; his right leg was stuffed with ten-dollar bills, and_his body so closely filled with fifties, one-hundreds and one-thousands that he_could scarcely button his jacket with comfort .

" you_are now" said the Woggle-Bug, impressively, when_the task had_been completed, "the most valuable member of_our party; and as_you

224 are among faithful friends there_is little danger of your being spent ."

" thank_you," returned the Scarecrow, gratefully ." I_feel like anew man; and although at first glance I_might_be mistaken for aSafety Deposit Vault, I beg you to remember that my Brains are still composed of_the same old material .And these are the possessions that_have always made me aperson to_be depended upon in an emergency ."

"Well, the emergency is here," observed Tip; "and unless your brains help_us out of it we_shall_be compelled to_pass the remainder of_our lives in_this nest ."

"How about these wishing pills ? " enquired the Scarecrow, taking the box from_his jacket pocket ."Can't we use them to escape ? "

"Not unless we_can count seventeen by twos," answered the Tin Woodman ."But our friend the Woggle-Bug claims to_be highly educated, so he ought easily to figure out how that can_be_done ."

"It isn't aquestion of education," returned the Insect; "it's merely aquestion of mathematics .I've seen the professor work lots of sums on_the blackboard, and he claimed anything could_be_done with x's and y's and a's, and such things, by mixing them up with plenty of plusses and minuses and equals, and so forth .But he never said anything, so_far as

225 I_can remember, about counting up_to_the odd number of seventeen by_the even numbers of twos ."

"Stop ! stop ! " cried the Pumpkinhead ."You're making my head ache ."

"And mine," added the Scarecrow ."Your mathematics seem to_me very like abottle of mixed pickles the more you fish for what you_want the less chance you_have of getting it . I_am certain that if_the thing can_be accomplished at all, it_is in avery simple manner ."

"Yes," said Tip ."old Mombi couldn't use x's and minuses, for she never went to school ."

" why_not start counting at ahalf of one ? " asked the Saw-Horse, abruptly ."Then anyone can count up_to seventeen by twos very easily ."

They looked at each_other in surprise, for_the Saw-Horse was considered the most stupid of_the entire party .

"You make me quite ashamed of myself," said the Scarecrow, bowing low to_the Saw-Horse .

"Nevertheless, the creature is right," declared the Woggle-Bug; for twice one-half is one, and if_you get to one it_is easy to count from one up_to seventeen by twos ."

"I wonder I didn't think of_that myself," said the Pumpkinhead .

226

"I don't," returned the Scarecrow ."You're no wiser than_the rest of us, are_you ? But let_us_make awish at once . who_will swallow the first pill ? "

"Suppose you_do it," suggested Tip .

" I_can't," said the Scarecrow .

" why_not ? You've amouth, haven't you ? " asked the boy .

"Yes; but my mouth is painted on, and there's no swallow connected with it,' answered the Scarecrow ." in_fact," he continued, looking from one to another critically, "I believe the boy and_the Woggle-Bug are the only ones in_our party that_are able to swallow ."

Observing the truth of_this remark, Tip said:

"Then i_will undertake to make_the first wish . give_me one_of_the Silver Pills ."

This the Scarecrow tried to_do; but his padded gloves were too clumsy to clutch so small an object, and he held the box toward the boy while Tip selected one_of_the pills and swallowed it .

"Count ! " cried the Scarecrow .

"One-half, one, three, five, seven, nine, eleven, ! " counted Tip .thirteen, fifteen, seventeen .

"Now wish ! " said the Tin Woodman anxiously:

But Just then the boy began to suffer such fearful pains that he became alarmed .

227

"The pill has poisoned me ! " he gasped; "O -- h ! O-o-o-o-o ! Ouch ! Murder ! Fire ! O-o-h ! " and here he rolled upon_the bottom of_the nest in_such contortions that he frightened them all .

"What can we_do for_you .Speak, I beg ! " entreated the Tin Woodman, tears of sympathy running down his nickel cheeks .

"I -- I don't know ! " answered Tip ."O -- h ! i_wish I'd never swallowed that pill ! "

Then at once the pain stopped, and_the boy rose to_his feet again and found the Scarecrow looking with amazement at_the end of_the pepper-box .

"What's happened ? " asked the boy, alittle ashamed of_his recent exhibition .

"Why, the three pills are in_the box again ! " said the Scarecrow .

" of_course they_are," the Woggle-Bug declared ."Didn't Tip wish that he'd never swallowed one_of_them ? Well, the wish came true, and he didn't swallow one_of_them .So of_course they_are all three in_the box ."

" that_may_be; but the pill gave_me adreadful pain, just the same," said the boy .

"Impossible ! " declared the Woggle-

228 Bug ." if_you_have never swallowed it, the pill can not have given you apain .And as_your wish, being granted, proves you_did_not swallow the pill, it_is also plain that you suffered no pain ."

"Then it_was asplendid imitation of apain," retorted Tip, angrily ."Suppose you try the next pill yourself .We've wasted one wish already ."

"Oh, no, we haven't ! " protested the Scarecrow ."Here are still three pills in_the box, and each pill is good for awish ."

"Now you're making my head ache," said Tip ." I_can't understand the thing at all .But I won't take another pill, I promise you ! " and with_this remark he retired sulkily to_the back of_the nest .

"Well," said the Woggle-Bug, "it remains for_me to save us in my most Highly Magnified and Thoroughly Educated manner; for I seem_to_be the only_one able and willing to_make awish .Let me have one_of_the pills ."

He swallowed it without hesitation, and_they all stood admiring his courage while the Insect counted seventeen by twos in_the same way that Tip had done .And for some reason -- perhaps because Woggle-Bugs have stronger stomachs than boys -- the silver pellet caused it no pain whatever .

" i_wish the Gump's broken wings mended, and

229 as good as new ! " said the Woggle-Bug, in aslow; impressive voice .

All turned to look at_the Thing, and so quickly had the wish been granted that_the Gump lay before them in perfect repair, and as_well able to fly through_the air as when it had first been brought to life on_the roof of_the palace .

231 The Scarecrow Appeals to Glenda the Good

"Hooray ! " shouted the Scarecrow, gaily ." we_can now leave this miserable Jackdaws' nest whenever we please ."

"But it_is nearly dark," said the Tin Woodman; "and unless we wait until morning to_make our flight we_may get into more trouble .I don't like these night trips, for_one never knows what_will happen ."

So it_was decided to wait until daylight, and_the adventurers amused themselves in_the twilight by searching the Jackdaws' nest for treasures .

The Woggle-Bug found two handsome bracelets of wrought gold, which fitted his slender arms very_well .The Scarecrow took afancy for rings, of_which there were many in_the nest
