" you_cannot drink it until it has become quite cold," announced the old witch for in_spite of_the law she had acknowledged practising witchcraft ." we_must both go to bed now, and at daybreak i_will call you and at once complete your transformation into amarble statue ."

with_this she hobbled into her room, bearing the steaming kettle with her, and Tip heard her close and lock the door .

The boy did_not go to bed, as he had_been commanded to_do, but still sat glaring at_the embers of_the dying fire .

29 The Flight of_the Fugitives

Tip reflected .

"It's ahard thing, to_be amarble statue," he thought, rebelliously, "and I'm not going to stand it .For years I've been abother to her, she says; so she's going to_get rid of me .Well, there's an easier way than to_become astatue .No boy could_have any fun forever standing in_the middle of aflower garden ! I'll run away, that's what I'll do -- and I_may as_well go before she makes me drink that nasty stuff in_the kettle ." He waited until the snores of_the old witch announced she was fast asleep, and then he arose softly and went to_the cupboard to_find something to eat .

30

"No use starting on ajourney without food," he decided, searching upon_the narrow shelves .

he_found some crusts of bread; but he had to look into Mombi's basket to_find the cheese she had brought from_the village .While turning over the contents of_the basket he_came upon_the pepper-box which contained the "Powder of Life ."

" I_may as_well take this with me," he thought, "or Mombi'll be using it to_make more mischief with ." So he put the box in_his pocket, together with_the bread and cheese .

Then he cautiously left the house and latched the door behind him .Outside both moon and stars shone brightly, and_the night seemed peaceful and inviting after_the close and ill-smelling kitchen .

"I'll be_glad to_get away," said Tip, softly; "for I never did like that old woman .I wonder how I ever came to live with her ."

he_was walking slowly toward the road when athought made him pause .

"I don't like to leave Jack Pumpkinhead to_the tender mercies of old Mombi," he muttered ."And Jack belongs to_me, for I_made him even if_the old witch did bring him to life ."

He retraced his steps to_the cow-stable and opened the door of_the stall where the pumpkin-

Jack was standing in_the middle of_the stall, and by_the moonlight Tip could_see he_was smiling just as jovially as ever .

"Come on ! " said the boy, beckoning ."

"Where to ? " asked Jack .

"You'll know as_soon_as I_do," answered Tip, smiling sympathetically into_the pumpkin face .

"All we've got to_do now is to tramp ."

" very_well," returned Jack, and walked awkwardly out_of_the stable and into_the moonlight .

Tip turned toward the road and_the man followed him .Jack walked with asort of limp, and occasionally one_of_the joints of_his legs would turn backward, instead of frontwise, almost causing him to tumble .But the Pumpkinhead was quick to notice this, and began to_take more pains to step carefully; so_that he met with few accidents .

Tip led him along the path without stopping an instant . they_could_not go very fast, but they walked steadily; and by_the_time the moon sank away and_the sun peeped over the hills they had travelled so great adistance that_the boy had no reason to fear pursuit from_the old witch .Moreover, he had turned first into one path, and then into another, so_that should anyone follow them it

33 would prove very difficult to guess which_way they had gone, or where to seek them .

Fairly satisfied that he had escaped -- for atime, at_least -- being turned into amarble statue, the boy stopped his companion and seated himself upon arock by_the roadside .

"Let's have some breakfast," he_said .

Jack Pumpkinhead watched Tip curiously, but refused to join in_the repast ."I don't seem_to_be made the same way you_are," he_said .

" I_know you_are_not," returned Tip; "for I_made you ."

"Oh ! Did you ? " asked Jack .

"Certainly .And put you together .And carved your eyes and nose and ears and

34 mouth," said Tip proudly ."And dressed you ."

Jack looked at his body and limbs critically .

"It strikes me you_made a very_good job of it," he remarked .

"Just so-so," replied Tip, modestly; for he began to_see certain defects in_the construction of_his man ."If I'd known we were going to travel together I might_have_been alittle more particular ."

"Why, then," said the Pumpkinhead, in atone that expressed surprise, " you_must_be my creator my parent my father ! "

"Or your inventor," replied the boy with alaugh ."Yes, my son; I really believe I_am ! "

"Then I owe you obedience," continued the man, "and you owe me -- support ."

"That's it, exactly", declared Tip, jumping up ."So let_us be off ."

"Where are we going ? " asked Jack, when_they had resumed their journey .

"I'm not exactly sure," said the boy; "but I believe we_are headed South, and that_will bring us, sooner or later, to_the Emerald City ."

"What city is_that ? " enquired the Pumpkinhead .

"Why, it's the center of_the Land of Oz, and_the biggest town in all the country .I've never been there, myself, but I've heard all about its

35 history . it_was built by amighty and wonderful Wizard named Oz, and everything there_is of agreen color -- just as everything in_this Country of_the Gillikins is of apurple color ."

"Is everything here purple ? " asked Jack .

" of_course_it_is .Can't you_see ? " returned the boy .

"I believe I_must_be color-blind," said the Pumpkinhead, after staring about him .

"Well, the grass is purple, and_the trees are purple, and_the houses and fences are purple," explained Tip ."Even the mud in_the roads is purple .But in_the Emerald City everything is green that_is purple here .And in_the Country of_the Munchkins, over at_the East, everything is blue; and in_the South country of_the Quadlings everything is red; and in_the West country of_the Winkies, where the Tin Woodman rules, everything is yellow ."

"Oh ! " said Jack .Then, after apause, he asked: "Did you say aTin Woodman rules the Winkies ? "

"Yes; he_was one of_those who helped Dorothy to destroy the Wicked Witch of_the West, and_the Winkies were so grateful that_they invited him to_become their ruler, -- just as_the people of_the Emerald City invited the Scarecrow to rule them ."

"Dear me ! " said Jack ."I'm getting confused with all this history . who_is the Scarecrow ? "

36

"Another friend of Dorothy's," replied Tip .

"And who_is Dorothy ? "

"She was agirl that came here from Kansas, aplace in_the big, outside World .She got blown to_the Land of Oz by acyclone, and while she was here the Scarecrow and_the Tin Woodman accompanied her on her travels ."

"And where is she now ? " inquired the Pumpkinhead .

"Glinda the Good, who rules the Quadlings, sent her home again," said the boy .

"Oh .And what became of_the Scarecrow ? "

" i_told you .He rules the Emerald City," answered Tip .

" i_thought you said it_was ruled by awonderful Wizard," objected Jack, seeming more and more confused .

"Well, so I_did .Now, pay attention, and I'll explain it," said Tip, speaking slowly and looking the smiling Pumpkinhead squarely in_the eye ."Dorothy went to_the Emerald City to ask_the Wizard to send her back to Kansas; and_the Scarecrow and_the Tin Woodman went with her .But the Wizard couldn't send her back, because he wasn't so_much of aWizard as he_might_have_been .And then they got angry at_the Wizard, and threat-

37 ened to expose him; so the Wizard made abig balloon and escaped in_it, and no one has ever seen him since ."

"Now, that_is very interesting history," said Jack, well pleased; "and I understand it perfectly all but the explanation ."

"I'm glad you_do," responded Tip ." after_the Wizard was gone, the people of_the Emerald City made His Majesty, the Scarecrow, their King; "and I_have heard that he became avery popular ruler ."

"Are we going to_see this queer King ? " asked Jack, with interest .

" i_think we_may as_well," replied the boy; "unless you_have something better to_do ."

"Oh, no, dear father," said the Pumpkinhead ." I_am quite willing to_go wherever you please ."

39 Tip Makes an Experiment in Magic

The boy, small and rather delicate in appearance seemed somewhat embarrassed at being called "father" by_the tall, awkward, pumpkinheaded man, but to deny the relationship would involve another long and tedious explanation; so he changed the subject by asking, abruptly:

" are_you tired ? "

" of_course not ! " replied the other ."But," he continued, after apause, " it_is quite certain I_shall wear out my wooden joints if I keep on walking ."

Tip reflected, as_they journeyed on, that_this was true .He began to regret that he
