."

"Well," replied Dorothy, "we'll prob'bly find out alot on_this trip, and we'll learn all about_the Skeezers and Flatheads, anyhow .Time doesn't make much diff'rence in_the Land of Oz, 'cause we don't grow up, or get old, or become sick and die, as_they do other places; so, if_we explore one place at_a_time, we'll by-an'-by know all about every nook and corner in Oz ."

Dorothy wore around her waist the Nome King's Magic Belt, which protected her from harm, and_the Magic Ring which Glinda had given her was on her finger .Ozma had merely slipped asmall silver wand into_the bosom of her gown, for fairies do_not use chemicals and herbs and_the tools of wizards and sorcerers to perform their magic .The Silver Wand was Ozma's one weapon of offense and defense and by its use she_could accomplish many things .

They had left the Emerald City just at sunrise and_the Sawhorse traveled very swiftly over the roads towards the north, but in afew hours the wooden animal had to slacken his pace because the farm houses had become few and far between and often there were no paths at all in_the direction they wished to_follow .At such times they crossed the fields, avoiding groups of trees and fording the streams and rivulets whenever they came to_them .But finally they reached abroad hillside closely covered with scrubby brush, through which the wagon could_not pass .

" it_will_be difficult even for_you and me to_get through without tearing our dresses," said Ozma, "so we_must leave the Sawhorse and_the Wagon here until our return ."

"That's all right," Dorothy replied, "I'm tired riding, anyhow . do_you s'pose, Ozma, we're anywhere near the Skeezer Country ? "

" I_cannot tell, Dorothy dear, but I_know we've been going in_the right direction, so we_are_sure to_find it in_time ."

The scrubby brush was almost like agrove of small trees, for_it reached as high as_the heads of_the two girls, neither of whom was very tall .They were obliged to thread their way in and out, until Dorothy was afraid they_would get lost, and finally they were halted by acurious thing that barred their further progress . it_was ahuge web -- as_if woven by gigantic spiders -- and_the delicate, lacy film was fastened stoutly to_the branches of_the bushes and continued to_the right and left in_the form of ahalf circle .The threads of_this web were of abrilliant purple color and woven into numerous artistic patterns, but it reached from_the ground to branches above the heads of_the girls and formed asort of fence that hedged them in .

"It doesn't look very strong, though," said Dorothy ."I wonder if_we couldn't break through ." She tried but found the web stronger than it seemed .All her efforts could_not break asingle thread .

" we_must go back, i_think, and try to_get around this peculiar web," Ozma decided .

So they turned to_the right and, following the web found that_it seemed to spread in aregular circle .On and on they went until finally Ozma said they had returned to_the exact spot from_which they had started ." here_is ahandkerchief you dropped when we were here before," she said to Dorothy .

" in_that case, they_must_have built the web behind us, after we walked into_the trap," exclaimed the little girl .

"True," agreed Ozma, "an enemy has tried to imprison us ."

"And they_did it, too," said Dorothy ."I wonder who it_was ."

"It's aspider-web, I'm quite_sure," returned Ozma, "but it must_be the work of enormous spiders ."

"Quite right ! " cried avoice behind them .Turning quickly around they beheld ahuge purple spider sitting not two yards away and regarding them with its small bright eyes .

Then there crawled from_the bushes adozen more great purple spiders, which saluted the first one and said:

"The web is finished, O King, and_the strangers are our prisoners ."

Dorothy did_not like the looks of_these spiders at all .They had big heads, sharp claws, small eyes and fuzzy hair all over their purple bodies .

"They look wicked," she whispered to Ozma ."What shall we_do ? "

Ozma gazed upon_the spiders with aserious face .

" what_is your object in making us prisoners ? " she inquired .

" we_need someone to_keep house for_us," answered the Spider King ." there_is sweeping and dusting to_be_done, and polishing and washing of dishes, and_that is work my people dislike to_do .So we decided that if any strangers came our way we_would capture them and make them our servants ."

" I_am Princess Ozma, Ruler of all Oz," said the girl with dignity .

"Well, I_am King of all Spiders," was_the reply, " and_that makes me your master .Come with me to my palace and_I_will instruct you in your work ."

"I won't," said Dorothy indignantly ."We won't have anything to_do with_you ."

"We'll see about_that," returned the Spider in asevere tone, and_the next instant he_made adive straight at Dorothy, opening the claws in_his legs as_if to grab and pinch her with_the sharp points .But the girl was wearing her Magic Belt and was not harmed .The Spider King could_not even touch her .He turned swiftly and made adash at Ozma, but she held her Magic Wand over his head and_the monster recoiled as_if it had_been struck .

"You'd better let_us go," Dorothy advised him, " for_you see you_can't hurt us ."

"So I_see," returned the Spider King angrily ."Your magic is greater than mine .But I'll not help_you to escape . if_you_can break the magic web my people have woven you_may go; if_not you_must stay here and starve ." with_that the Spider King uttered apeculiar whistle and all the spiders disappeared .

" there_is more magic in my fairyland than I dreamed of," remarked the beautiful Ozma, with asigh of regret ."It seems that my laws have_not_been obeyed, for even these monstrous spiders defy me by_means of Magic ."

"Never mind that now," said Dorothy; "let's see what we_can do to_get out of_this trap ."

They now examined the web with great care and were amazed at its strength .Although finer than_the finest silken hairs, it resisted all their efforts to work through, even though both girls threw all their weight against it .

" we_must find some instrument which will cut the threads of_the web," said Ozma, finally ." let_us look about for such atool ."

So they wandered among_the bushes and finally came to ashallow pool of water, formed by asmall bubbling spring .Dorothy stooped to_get adrink and discovered in_the water agreen crab, about as big as her hand .The crab had two big, sharp claws, and as_soon_as Dorothy saw them she had an idea that_those claws could save them .

"Come out_of_the water," she called to_the crab; " i_want to_talk to_you ."

Rather lazily the crab rose to_the surface and caught hold of abit of rock . with_his head above the water he_said in across voice:

"What do_you_want ? "

" we_want you to cut the web of_the purple spiders with your claws, so we_can get through it," answered Dorothy ." you_can do_that, can't you ? "

"I suppose so," replied the crab ."But if I_do what_will you give_me ? "

"What do_you wish ? " Ozma inquired .

" i_wish to_be white, instead of green," said the crab ."Green crabs are very common, and white ones are rare; besides the purple spiders, which infest this hillside, are afraid of white crabs .Could you make me white if i_should agree to cut the web for_you ? "

"Yes," said Ozma, " I_can do_that easily .And, so you_may know I_am speaking the truth, i_will change your color now ."

She waved her silver wand over the pool and_the crab instantly became snow-white -- all except his eyes, which remained black .The creature saw his reflection in_the water and was so delighted that he at once climbed out_of_the pool and began moving slowly toward the web, by backing away from_the pool .He moved so very slowly that Dorothy cried out impatiently: "Dear me, this_will never do ! " Caching the crab in her hands she ran with_him to_the web .

She had to hold him up even then, so he_could reach with_his claws strand after strand of_the filmy purple web, which he_was able to sever with one nip .

When enough of_the web had_been cut to allow them to_pass, Dorothy ran back to_the pool and placed the white crab in_the water, after which she rejoined Ozma .They were just in_time to escape through_the web, for several of_the purple spiders now appeared, having discovered that their web had_been cut, and had the girls not rushed through_the opening the spiders would_have quickly repaired the cuts and again imprisoned them .

Ozma and Dorothy ran as fast as they_could and although the angry spiders threw anumber of strands of web after them, hoping to lasso them or entangle them in_the coils, they managed to escape and clamber to_the top of_the hill .

Chapter Three

The Mist Maidens

from_the top of_the hill Ozma and Dorothy looked down into_the valley beyond and were surprised to_find it filled with afloating mist that was as dense as smoke .Nothing in_the valley was visible except these rolling waves of mist, but beyond, on_the other side, rose agrassy hill that appeared quite beautiful .

"Well," said Dorothy, " what_are we to_do, Ozma ? Walk down into that thick fog, an' prob'bly get lost in_it, or wait till it clears away ? "

"I'm not sure it_will clear away, however long we wait," replied Ozma, doubtfully ."If we_wish to_get on, i_think we_must venture into_the mist ."

"But we_can't see where we're going, or what we're stepping on," protested Dorothy ." there_may_be dreadful things mixed up in_that fog, an' I'm scared just to_think of wading into_it
