and_the Emerald City, too," remarked the Wizard, in athoughtful tone, "and I'd like to_see them again, for i_was very happy among_the Munchkins and Winkies and Quadlings and Gillikins ."

" who_are they ? " asked the boy .

"The four nations that inhabit the Land of Oz," was_the reply ."I wonder if_they_would treat me nicely if I went there again ."

" of_course they_would ! " declared Dorothy ." they_are still proud of_their former Wizard, and often speak of you kindly ."

" do_you happen to_know whatever became of_the Tin Woodman and_the Scarecrow ? " he enquired .

"They live in Oz yet," said the girl, " and_are very_important people ."

" and_the Cowardly Lion ? "

"Oh, he lives there too, with_his friend the Hungry Tiger; and Billina is_there, because she liked the place better than Kansas, and wouldn't go with me to Australia ."

"I'm afraid I don't know the Hungry Tiger and Billina," said the Wizard, shaking his head ."Is Billina agirl ? "

"No; she's ayellow hen, and agreat friend of_mine .You're sure to like Billina, when_you know her," asserted Dorothy .

"Your friends sound like amenagerie," remarked Zeb, uneasily ."Couldn't you wish me in some safer place than Oz ."

"Don't worry," replied the girl ."You'll just love the folks in Oz, when_you get acquainted .What time is_it, Mr Wizard ? "

The little man looked at his watch--a big silver one that he carried in_his vest pocket .

"Half-past three," he_said .

"Then we_must wait for half an hour," she continued; "but it won't take long, after_that, to carry us all to_the Emerald City ."

They sat silently thinking for atime .Then Jim suddenly asked:

"Are there any horses in Oz ? "

" only_one," replied Dorothy, "and he's asawhorse ."

"A what ? "

"A sawhorse .Princess Ozma once brought him to life with awitch-powder, when she was aboy ."

"Was Ozma once aboy ? " asked Zeb, wonderingly .

"Yes; awicked witch enchanted her, so she_could_not rule her kingdom .But she's agirl now, and_the sweetest, loveliest girl in all the world ."

"A sawhorse is athing they saw boards on," remarked Jim, with asniff .

" it_is when it's not alive," acknowledged the girl ."But this sawhorse can trot as fast as_you_can, Jim; and he's very wise, too ."

"Pah ! I'll race the miserable wooden donkey any day in_the week ! " cried the cab-horse .

Dorothy did_not reply to_that .She felt that Jim would know more about_the Saw-Horse later on .

The time dragged wearily enough to_the eager watchers, but finally the Wizard announced that four o'clock had arrived, and Dorothy caught up the kitten and began to make_the signal that had_been agreed upon to_the far-away invisible Ozma .

"Nothing seems to happen," said Zeb, doubtfully .

"Oh, we_must give Ozma time to_put on_the Magic Belt," replied the girl .

She had scarcely spoken the words then she suddenly disappeared from_the cave, and with her went the kitten .There had_been no sound of any kind and no warning .One moment Dorothy sat beside them with_the kitten in her lap, and amoment later the horse, the piglets, the Wizard and_the boy were all that remained in_the underground prison .

"I believe we_will soon follow her," announced the Wizard, in atone of great relief; "for I_know something about_the magic of_the fairyland that_is called the Land of Oz . let_us be ready, for we_may_be sent for any minute ."

He put the piglets safely away in_his pocket again and then he and Zeb got into_the buggy and sat expectantly upon_the seat .

"Will it hurt ? " asked the boy, in avoice that trembled alittle .

"Not at all," replied the Wizard ." it_will all happen as quick as awink ."

and_that was_the way it did happen .

The cab-horse gave anervous start and Zeb began to rub his eyes to_make sure he_was not asleep .For they were in_the streets of abeautiful emerald-green city, bathed in agrateful green light that was especially pleasing to_their eyes, and surrounded by merry faced people in gorgeous green-and-gold costumes of many extraordinary designs .

Before them were the jewel-studded gates of amagnificent palace, and now the gates opened slowly as_if inviting them to enter the courtyard, where splendid flowers were blooming and pretty fountains shot their silvery sprays into_the air .

Zeb shook the reins to rouse the cab-horse from_his stupor of amazement, for_the people were beginning to gather around and stare at_the strangers .

"Gid-dap ! " cried the boy, and at_the word Jim slowly trotted into_the courtyard and drew the buggy along the jewelled driveway to_the great entrance of_the royal palace .

15 .Old Friends are Reunited

Many servants dressed in handsome uniforms stood ready to welcome the new arrivals, and when_the Wizard got out_of_the buggy apretty girl in agreen gown cried out in surprise:

"Why, it's Oz, the Wonderful Wizard, come back again ! "

The little man looked at her closely and then took both the maiden's hands in_his and shook them cordially .

"On my word," he exclaimed, "it's little Jellia Jamb--as pert and pretty as ever ! "

" why_not, Mr Wizard ? " asked Jellia, bowing low ."But I'm afraid you_cannot rule the Emerald City, as_you used to, because we now have abeautiful Princess whom everyone loves dearly ."

" and_the people will not willingly part with her," added atall soldier in aCaptain-General's uniform .

The Wizard turned to look at him .

"Did you not wear green whiskers at one_time ? " he asked .

"Yes," said the soldier; "but I shaved them off long_ago, and since then I_have risen from aprivate to_be the Chief General of_the Royal Armies ."

"That's nice," said the little man ."But I assure you, my good people, that I_do_not wish to rule the Emerald City," he added, earnestly .

" in_that case you_are very welcome ! " cried all the servants, and it pleased the Wizard to note the respect with_which the royal retainers bowed before him .His fame had_not_been forgotten in_the Land of Oz, by any means .

"Where is Dorothy ? " enquired Zeb, anxiously, as he left the buggy and stood beside his friend the little Wizard .

" she_is with_the Princess Ozma, in_the private rooms of_the palace," replied Jellia Jamb ."But she has ordered me to_make you welcome and to show you to your apartments ."

The boy looked around him with wondering eyes .Such magnificence and wealth as was displayed in_this palace was more than he had ever dreamed of, and he_could scarcely believe that all the gorgeous glitter was real and not tinsel .

"What's to_become of me ? " asked the horse, uneasily .He had seen considerable of life in_the cities in_his younger days, and knew that_this regal palace was no place for him .

It perplexed even Jellia Jamb, for atime, to_know what to_do with_the animal .The green maiden was much astonished at_the sight of so unusual acreature, for horses were unknown in_this Land; but those who lived in_the Emerald City were apt to_be astonished by queer sights, so after inspecting the cab-horse and noting the mild look in_his big eyes the girl decided not to_be afraid of him .

" there_are no stables here," said the Wizard, "unless some have_been built since I went away ."

" we_have never needed them before," answered Jellia; " for_the Sawhorse lives in aroom of_the palace, being much smaller and more natural in appearance than this great beast you_have brought with_you ."

" do_you_mean that I'm afreak ? " asked Jim, angrily .

"Oh, no," she hastened to_say, " there_may_be many more like you in_the place you came from, but in Oz any horse but aSawhorse is unusual ."

This mollified Jim alittle, and after some thought the green maiden decided to_give the cab-horse aroom in_the palace, such abig building having many rooms that were seldom in use .

So Zeb unharnessed Jim, and several of_the servants then led the horse around to_the rear, where they selected anice large apartment that he could_have all to himself .

Then Jellia said to_the Wizard:

"Your own room-- which_was back of_the great Throne Room-- has_been vacant ever_since you left us .Would you like it again ? "

"Yes, indeed ! " returned the little man ." it_will seem like being at home again, for I lived in_that room for many, many years ."

he_knew the way to_it, and aservant followed him, carrying his satchel .Zeb was also escorted to aroom--so grand and beautiful that he almost feared to sit in_the chairs or lie upon_the bed, lest he might dim their splendor . in_the closets he discovered many fancy costumes of rich velvets and brocades, and one_of_the attendants told him to dress himself in any of_the clothes that pleased him and to_be prepared to dine with_the Princess and Dorothy in an hour's time .

Opening from_the chamber was afine bathroom having amarble tub with perfumed water; so the boy, still dazed by_the novelty of_his surroundings, indulged in agood bath and then selected amaroon velvet costume with silver buttons to replace his own soiled and much worn clothing .There were silk stockings and soft leather slippers with diamond buckles to accompany his new costume, and when he_was fully dressed Zeb looked much more dignified and imposing than ever before in_his life .

he_was all ready when an attendant came to escort him to_the presence of_the Princess; he followed bashfully and was ushered into aroom more dainty and attractive than it_was splendid .Here he_found Dorothy seated beside ayoung girl so marvelously beautiful that_the boy stopped suddenly with agasp of admiration .

But Dorothy sprang up and ran to seize her friend's hand drawing him impulsively toward the lovely Princess, who smiled most graciously upon her guest .Then the Wizard entered, and_his presence relieved the boy's embarrassment .The little man was clothed in black velvet, with many sparkling emerald ornaments decorating his breast; but his bald head and wrinkled features made him appear more amusing than impressive .

Ozma had_been quite curious to meet the famous man who had built the Emerald City and united the Munchkins, Gillikins, Quadlings and Winkies into one people; so when_they were all four seated at_the dinner table the Princess said:

"Please tell me, Mr Wizard, whether you called yourself Oz after_this great country, or whether you believe my country is called Oz after you . it_is
