.It would_have_been adismal vigil were it not for_the expectation and excitement which carried us along, and_the assurance of_my comrade that we had probably reached the end of_the strange sequence of events which had engaged our attention .

" if_the cycle of nine days holds good then we_shall_have the professor at his worst to-night," said Holmes ."The fact that_these strange symptoms began after his visit to Prague, that he_is in secret correspondence with aBohemian dealer in London, who presumably represents someone in Prague, and_that he received apacket from_him this very day, all point in one direction .What he takes and why he takes it are still beyond our ken, but that_it emanates in some way from Prague is clear enough .He takes it under definite directions which regulate this ninth-day system, which_was the first point which attracted my attention .But his symptoms are most remarkable .Did you observe his knuckles ? "

I had to confess that I_did_not .

"Thick and horny in away which_is quite new in my experience .Always look at_the hands first, Watson .Then cuffs, trouserknees, and boots .Very curious knuckles which can only be explained by_the mode of progression observed by --" Holmes paused and suddenly clapped his hand to_his forehead ."Oh, Watson, Watson, what afool I_have_been ! It seems incredible, and yet it must_be true .All points in one direction .How could I miss seeing the connection of ideas ? Those knuckles how could I_have passed those knuckles ? and_the dog ! and_the ivy ! It's surely time that I disappeared into that little farm of_my dreams .Look out, Watson ! Here he_is ! we_shall_have the chance of seeing for ourselves ."

The hall door had slowly opened, and against the lamplit background we saw the tall figure of Professor Presbury . he_was clad in_his dressing gown .As he stood outlined in_the doorway he_was erect but leaning forward with dangling arms, as when we saw him last .

Now he stepped forward into_the drive, and an extraordinary change came over him .He sank down into acrouching position and moved along upon his hands and feet, skipping every now_and_then as_if he were overflowing with energy and vitality .He moved along the face of_the house and then round the corner .As he disappeared Bennett slipped through_the hall door and softly followed him .

"Come, Watson, come ! " cried Holmes, and we stole as softly as we_could through_the bushes until we had gained aspot whence we could_see the other side of_the house, which_was bathed in_the light of_the half-moon .The professor was clearly visible crouching at_the foot of_the ivy-covered wall . as_we watched him he suddenly began with incredible agility to ascend it .From branch to branch he sprang, sure of foot and firm of grasp, climbing apparently in mere joy at his own powers, with no definite object in view . with_his dressing-gown flapping on each side of him, he looked like some huge bat glued against the side of_his own house, agreat square dark patch upon_the moonlit wall .Presently he tired of_this amusement, and, dropping from branch to branch, he squatted down into_the old attitude and moved towards the stables, creeping along in_the same strange way as before .The wolfhound was out now, barking furiously, and more excited than ever when it actually caught sight of_its master . it_was straining on its chain and quivering with eagerness and rage .The professor squatted down very deliberately just out of reach of_the hound and began to provoke it in every possible way . he_took handfuls of pebbles from_the drive and threw them in_the dog's face, prodded him with astick which he had picked up, flicked his hands about only afew inches from_the gaping mouth, and endeavoured in every way to increase the animal's fury, which_was already beyond all control .In all our adventures I_do_not know that I_have ever seen amore strange sight than this impassive and still dignified figure crouching frog-like upon_the ground and goading to awilder exhibition of passion the maddened hound, which ramped and raged in front of him, by all manner of ingenious and calculated cruelty .

And then in amoment it happened ! it_was not the chain that broke, but it was_the collar that slipped, for_it had_been made for athick-necked Newfoundland .We heard the rattle of falling metal, and_the next instant dog and man were rolling on_the ground together, the one roaring in rage, the other screaming in astrange shrill falsetto of terror . it_was avery narrow thing for_the professor's life .The savage creature had him fairly by_the throat, its fangs had bitten deep, and he_was senseless before we_could reach them and drag the two apart .It might_have_been adangerous task for_us, but Bennett's voice and presence brought the great wolflhound instantly to reason .The uproar had brought the sleepy and astonished coachman from_his room above the stables ."I'm not surprised," said he, shaking his head ."I've seen him at it before . I_knew the dog would get him sooner or later ."

The hound was secured, and together we carried the professor up to_his room, where Bennett, who had amedical degree, helped me to dress his torn throat .The sharp teeth had passed dangerously near the carotid artery, and_the haemorrhage was serious .In half an hour the danger was past, I had given the patient an injection of morphia, and he had sunk into deep sleep .Then, and only then, were we able to look at each_other and to_take stock of_the situation .

" i_think afirst-class surgeon should_see him," said I .

"For God's sake, no ! " cried Bennett ."At present the scandal is confined to our own household . it_is safe with_us . if_it gets beyond these walls it_will never stop .Consider his position at_the university, his European reputation, the feelings of_his daughter ."

"Quite so," said Holmes ." i_think it may_be quite possible to_keep the matter to ourselves, and also to_prevent its recurrence now that we_have afree hand .The key from_the watch-chain, Mr Bennett .Macphail will guard the patient and_let_us_know if_there_is any change . let_us_see what we_can find in_the professor's mysterious box ."

there_was not much, but there_was enough -- an empty phial, another nearly full, ahypodermic syringe, several letters in acrabbed, foreign hand .The marks on_the envelopes showed that_they were those which had disturbed the routine of_the secretary, and each was dated from_the Commercial Road and signed "A .Dorak ." They were mere invoices to_say that afresh bottle was being sent to Professor Presbury, or receipt to acknowledge money . there_was one other envelope, however, in amore educated hand and bearing the Austrian stamp with_the postmark of Prague ."Here we_have our material ! " cried Holmes as he tore out the enclosure .

HONOURED COLLEAGUE [it ran]: Since your esteemed visit I_have thought much of your case, and though in your circumstances there_are some special reasons for_the treatment, i_would none the less enjoin caution, as my results have shown that_it_is not without danger of akind . it_is possible that_the serum of anthropoid would_have_been better . I_have, as I explained to_you, used black-faced langur because aspecimen was accessible .Langur is, of_course, acrawler and climber, while anthropoid walks erect and_is in all ways nearer .I beg you to_take every possible precaution that there be no premature revelation of_the process . I_have one other client in England, and Dorak is my agent for both .

Weekly reports will oblige .Yours with high esteem, H .LOWENSTEIN .

Lowenstein ! The name brought back to_me the memory of some snippet from anewspaper which spoke of an obscure scientist who was striving in some unknown way for_the secret of rejuvenescence and_the elixir of life .Lowenstein of Prague ! Lowenstein with_the wondrous strength-giving serum, tabooed by_the profession because he refused to reveal its source .In afew words I_said what I remembered .Bennett had taken amanual of zoology from_the shelves ." 'Langur .' " he read ." 'the great black-faced monkey of_the Himalayan slopes, biggest and most human of climbing monkeys .Many details are added .Well, thanks to_you, Mr Holmes, it_is very clear that we_have traced the evil to its source ."

"The real source," said Holmes, "lies, of_course, in_that untimely love affair which gave our impetuous professor the idea that he_could only gain his wish by turning himself into ayounger man .When one tries to rise above Nature one is liable to_fall below it .The highest type of man may revert to_the animal if he leaves the straight road of destiny ." He sat musing for alittle with_the phial in_his hand, looking at_the clear liquid within ."When I_have written to_this man and told him that I hold him criminally responsible for_the poisons which he circulates, we_will_have no more trouble .But it may recur .Others may find abetter way . there_is danger there -- avery real danger to humanity .Consider, Watson, that_the material, the sensual, the worldly would all prolong their worthless lives .The spiritual would_not avoid the call to something higher .It would_be the survival of_the least fit .What sort of cesspool may not our poor world become ? " Suddenly the dreamer disappeared, and Holmes, the man of action, sprang from_his chair ." i_think there_is nothing more to_be said, Mr Bennett .The various incidents will now fit themselves easily into_the general scheme .The dog, of_course, was aware of_the change far more quickly than you .His smell would insure that .It was_the monkey, not the professor, whom Roy attacked, just as it was_the monkey who teased Roy .Climbing was ajoy to_the creature, and it_was amere chance, I take it, that_the pastime brought him to_the young lady's window . there_is an early train to town, Watson, but i_think we_shall just have time for acup of tea at_the Chequers before we catch it ."
