I_could catch him, so I've stood around ever_since trying to_find out what one does with alife ."

"Great Grandfathers ! " choked the clown ."Fancy being alive for centuries and not knowing what to_do .Why, there_are hundreds of things to interest you, especially in amagic country like Oz .

you_could travel, and help other folks not so strong as yourself . you_could offer your services to_the Queen, or even build acity ! "

"Could I ? " gasped Crunch .He stared off into space as_if he_saw himself doing all these things, and_the idea was almost too amazing to_believe .Then, bringing his stone heels together with aclick, he announced determinedly, "I'll do_it ! I'll travel, I'll help people, I'll see the Queen and build acity ! "

"Hurrah ! " cried Notta ."That's the way to_talk .And since we_are traveling, why_not join us ? " Crunch, he decided, might prove useful in abattle .

"Can I walk beside him ? " asked the Stone Man, pointing at_the Cowardly Lion .

" if_you're steady on_your pins," rumbled the Cowardly Lion, "and promise not to_fall on me .

"Where does the Queen of_this country live ? " asked Crunch, after he had promised not to_fall on_the Cowardly Lion .

" in_the Emerald City," piped up Bob, who had_been listening to_the Stone Man's conversation with deep interest .

"Oh, that_must be over there," said Crunch, waving toward the east, "for often at night, when I've climbed Stone Mountain, I've seen bright green lights twinkling in_the darkness ."

"Why, of_course_it_is," roared the Cowardly Lion in great excitement, "though why you_have never gone over to_find out I_cannot imagine ! "

"That's because you were never astone man," sighed Crunch solemnly .

"Then we'll soon see Dorothy and_the Scarecrow ! " cried Bob, clapping his hands ."Come on, let's go to_the Emerald City right away .

Nick flew off to_the top of_the mountain to investigate for himself .

"You forget Mustafa's enchantment," sighed Notta, pointing sadly to_the rope that still bound him to_the Cowardly Lion ."I daresay if_we took astep toward the Emerald City, Mustafa would ring us up again ."

" who_is Mustafa and why has he enchanted you ? " demanded Crunch, rubbing his stone forehead noisily .Notta explained as_much of_their story as he thought the Stone Man would understand, and when he had finished Crunch gave alittle spring that almost knocked them from_the ledge ."Why, it_is as clear as cobbles," he roared, bringing down his fist upon arock and splintering it to fragments ." you_are weaker than I and, as I_have fully determined to help someone, let me help_you .Where is_this Mustafa of Mudge ? Take me to him and_I_will pound him to powder and disperse him to_the winds ."

Before Notta could answer Nick came flying back to assure them that he had really seen the Emerald City from_the mountain top and_that it lay scarcely ahalf day's journey away ."Then it seems to_me," said Notta, who had_been doing some quick thinking, " that_the time has_come for_us to separate .Bob, Nick and_I_will hasten to_this Emerald City and appeal to Ozma, Dorothy and_the Wizard of Oz .Meanwhile the Cowardly Lion can start toward Mudge and thus Mustafa's ring will not betray us .But before he reaches there we_will_have found away to help him ."

" and_I_will go with_the Cowardly Lion," declared Crunch promptly, "for i_would rather help him than any_one else ."

"Hurrah ! " cried Bob Up, and so it_was all decided .Then Notta sat on_the Cowardly Lion's back and he sprang down from_the ledge .Next Snorer flew down with Bob, and_the clown untied the rope that tied him to_the lion .Immediately he and Bob turned blue, but when_the Cowardly Lion took afew steps south, the blue quickly faded out .Notta was so relieved to_be free that he turned six somersaults, stood on_his head, and ran several paces on_his hands, while Bob and Nick shouted with glee .

"Crush and crumble me ! " rasped the Stone Man, eyeing the clown in alarm, "is that_the way men get about nowdays ? The men I watched in_the stone age never did that and I simply could_not manage it, you_know ."

"Don't try," begged Notta, and Nick hastened to assure him that most men walked in_the usual fashion one foot before_the other .

"Mudge should_be exactly southwest from here, so come on, old Cave Man, let's be moving .Together we'll conquer the whole tribe of Mudgers," said the lion .

"You won't have to," cried Notta, giving the Cowardly Lion an affectionate hug, " if_this Wizard of Oz is as clever as he's said to_be ."

Crunch waited impatiently while Nick and Bob bade the Cowardly Lion goodbye .Having stood around for seven centuries, he_could_not bear to waste another second, and when_the Cowardly Lion at last declared himself ready to_go he tramped off joyfully, each step shaking the ground like asmall earthquake and enveloping the poor lion in acloud of dust .

"Goodbye ! " called Bob Up shrilly, as_they turned into anarrow rocky path and disappeared behind asmall mountain .

"Goodbye ! " roared the Cowardly Lion, bravely waving his tail in farewell . so_much had happened since their flight from Un that Notta had forgotten all about_the_time of day, but when he started up the mountain, he grew so faint, he had to sit down on arock .Bob, too, looked pale and weary, and every few hops Nick would close his eyes and indulge in atremulous snore .

"Great Elephants ! " puffed Notta at last, squinting up at_the sun ."It must_be nearly five o'clock and we've had nothing to eat since morning . have_you still got those eggs, Bob Up ? " Bob felt hurriedly in_his blouse and, with atriumphant smile, produced the eggs they had picked from_the travelers' tree .They were somewhat squashed, but when_the shells had_been removed they tasted delicious to_the famished travelers .Washed down with some water from alittle spring, the food renewed their strength and courage for_the journey ahead .

" I_hope nothing happens to_the Cowardly Lion," said Bob, as_they started up the mountain again, "for I love him ."

"So do I," croaked the Snorer, who was flying alittle ahead, "and I_shall miss him very_much when we go to America to_make our fortune .But, of_course I_could_not leave that beautiful person ." He rolled his eyes proudly at Notta, and_the clown quite unconsciously sighed .Life in acircus would seem terribly tame after_this marvelous trip through Oz .

"We ought_to_be home tomorrow, if everything works out," he remarked soberly, with an anxious glance at Bob . at_the word "home" the little boy shivered slightly, for home to him meant agreat, dreary institution where little boys whom nobody wanted were grudgingly sheltered and eternally shaken . in_his heart he hoped the magic of_this Wizard of Oz would_not_be strong enough to send_them back .Notta was wondering to himself whether the managers of_the home would trust alittle boy's future to aclown and resolving darkly that, if_they wouldn't, he'd take him anyhow .But he_said nothing of_this to Bob Up, and presently broke into such acomical song Bob forgot all about going back . this_was the song:

"A goblin's ears are very long, agoblin's nose goes wobble, But what I'd really like to_know Is what makes goblins gobble ? Perhaps they gobble 'cause they're imps-And dreadfully imp-olite ! Pshaw, all they_do is squabble hobble, Gobble through_the night ! "

"Speaking of night," chuckled Snorer, balancing on_the branch of alow tree, "we'll probably have to_spend it in_that forest below, for_it would hardly be safe to travel in_the dark and it'll be dark by_the_time we're down this mountain .

"Well," laughed Notta, "it wouldn't be the first time Bob and I_have slept in aforest, and your snores ought to scare off any wild animals ."

"That's so," sighed Nick, adjusting his nose, and quite satisfied he flew on ahead .The path was rough and uneven and, though Notta and Bob frequently slipped and slid, in another hour they were safely down the mountain . it_was dusk as_they stepped into_the strange forest, and Bob fancied the trees were peering down at him kindly .They were so tired Notta paused under an immense maple tree and Nick leaned up against the trunk and fell instantly to snoring and stamping, while Notta began gathering branches and leaves for beds .The clown spread his old lion disguise over Bob's pile and_the little boy, stretching out comfortably, gazed up at_the first star twinkling merrily in_the evening sky and thought how strange his narrow bed at_the home would seem after_this .The wind sighed in_the tree tops with agentle and soothing sound, and even Nick's snoring seemed comforting and pleasant to Bob Up .

"Bob," said Notta, as he dropped down beside him, " this_is_the friendliest forest i_was ever in .Bob nodded, and at_this alittle rustle went rippling through_the forest as if_the trees had actually heard him, and in_the same instant each tree quietly opened its trunk and drew forth afiddle .

Before Notta and Bob had recovered from their surprise awave of music swept through_the wood, now soft, now loud, but more entrancing than any they had ever heard . and_the trees, swaying and bending in_the dim starlight, plied their bows with more skill than any orchestra in_the mortal world .For Bob and Notta, you_see, had come to_the Fiddlestick Forest of Oz .

CHAPTER 18 Notta's Last Disguise

OF all his adventures, Bob remembered this strange concert longest .The fairylike music, that even made the Moon bend down to listen, the drumlike accompaniment of Nick's snores and_the misty faces of_the trees themselves, bending down in_the dim starlight, all added to_the enchantment .Bob could_not remember falling asleep, for all through his dreams marched the music of_the fiddles-but he_must_have slept, for opening his eyes suddenly, he_found the sun out and shining merrily .He looked around to ask Notta whether he had dreamed about_the fiddles or really heard them, but Notta was nowhere to_be seen .Nick, too, had vanished .

Rather alarmed, Bob jumped up .As he_did so alarge green leaf with white lines traced on_it fluttered to_the ground .

" you_may use the Fiddlebow Boat," said the leaf and, looking up, Bob fancied the big tree was smiling at him .So he_made astiff little bow and, holding fast to_the leaf, started off uneasily to_find his friends .The sound of water rippling over stones took him to_the left, for he_was terribly thirsty and in afew seconds he had come out on arapid little stream .The water was so clear Bob could_see the white stones gleaming on_the bottom .Throwing himself down, he_took along, satisfying drink .When he straightened up he_was astonished to_see
