before_the wedding there_was aparagraph in_the MORNING POST to_say that_it_was all off .And why ? it_is almost incredible, but the absurd sum of twelve hundred pounds would_have settled the whole question . is_it not pitiful ? And here I_find you, aman of sense, boggling about terms when your client's future and honour are at stake .You surprise me, Mr Holmes ."

"What I_say is true," Holmes answered ."The money cannot_be found .Surely it_is better for_you to take_the substantial sum which I offer than to ruin this woman's career, which can profit you in no way ? "

"There you make amistake, Mr Holmes .An exposure would profit me indirectly to aconsiderable extent . I_have eight or ten similar cases maturing . if_it_was circulated among them that I had made asevere example of_the Lady Eva i_should find all of_them much more open to reason . you_see my point ? "

Holmes sprang from_his chair .

"Get behind him, Watson ! Don't let him out ! Now, sir, let_us_see the contents of_that note-book ."

Milverton had glided as quick as arat to_the side of_the room, and stood with_his back against the wall .

" Mr Holmes, Mr Holmes," he_said, turning the front of_his coat and exhibiting the butt of alarge revolver, which projected from_the inside pocket ." I_have_been expecting you to_do something original .This has_been_done so often, and what good has ever come from_it ? I assure you that I_am armed to_the teeth, and I_am perfectly prepared to use my weapons, knowing that_the law will support me .Besides, your supposition that i_would bring the letters here in anote-book is entirely mistaken . i_would do nothing so foolish .And now, gentlemen, I_have one_or_two little interviews this evening, and it_is along drive to Hampstead ." He stepped forward, took up his coat, laid his hand on_his revolver, and turned to_the door .I picked up achair, but Holmes shook his head and I laid it down again .With bow, asmile, and atwinkle Milverton was out_of_the room, and a few_moments after we heard the slam of_the carriage door and_the rattle of_the wheels as he drove away .

Holmes sat motionless by_the fire, his hands buried deep in_his trouser pockets, his chin sunk upon his breast, his eyes fixed upon_the glowing embers .For half an hour he_was silent and still .Then, with_the gesture of aman who has taken his decision, he sprang to_his feet and passed into his bedroom .alittle later arakish young workman with agoatee beard and aswagger lit his clay pipe at_the lamp before descending into_the street ."I'll be back some_time, Watson," said he, and vanished into_the night .I understood that he had opened his campaign against Charles Augustus Milverton; but I little dreamed the strange shape which that campaign was destined to_take .

For some days Holmes came and went at all hours in_this attire, but beyond aremark that his time was spent at Hampstead, and that_it_was not wasted, I_knew nothing of what he_was doing .At last, however, on awild, tempestuous evening, when_the wind screamed and rattled against the windows, he returned from_his last expedition, and having removed his disguise he sat before_the fire and laughed heartily in_his silent inward fashion .

" you_would_not call me amarrying man, Watson ? "

"No, indeed ! "

"You'll be interested to hear that I_am engaged ."

"My dear fellow ! I congrat ----"

"To Milverton's housemaid ."

"Good heavens, Holmes ! "

" i_wanted information, Watson ."

"Surely you have_gone too far ? "

" it_was amost necessary step . I_am aplumber with arising business, Escott by name . I_have walked out with her each evening, and I_have talked with her .Good heavens, those talks ! However, I_have got all i_wanted . I_know Milverton's house as I_know the palm of_my hand ."

"But the girl, Holmes ? "

He shrugged his shoulders .

" you_can't help it, my dear Watson . you_must play your cards as best you_can when such astake is on_the table .However, I rejoice to_say that I_have ahated rival who_will certainly cut me out the instant that my back is turned .What asplendid night it_is ! "

"You like this weather ? "

"It suits my purpose .Watson, I mean to burgle Milverton's house to-night ."

I had acatching of_the breath, and my skin went cold at_the words, which were slowly uttered in atone of concentrated resolution .As aflash of lightning in_the night shows up in an instant every detail of awide landscape, so at one glance I seemed to_see every possible result of_such an action -- the detection, the capture, the honoured career ending in irreparable failure and disgrace, my friend himself lying at_the mercy of_the odious Milverton .

"For Heaven's sake, Holmes, think what you_are doing," I cried .

"My dear fellow, I_have_given it every consideration . I_am never precipitate in my actions, nor would I adopt so energetic and indeed so dangerous acourse if any_other were possible . let_us look at_the matter clearly and fairly .I suppose that you_will admit that_the action is morally justifiable, though technically criminal .To burgle his house is no more than to forcibly take his pocket-book -- an action in_which_you were prepared to aid me ."

I turned it over in my mind .

"Yes," I_said; " it_is morally justifiable so_long as our object is to_take no articles save those which are used for an illegal purpose ."

"Exactly .Since it_is morally justifiable I_have only to consider the question of personal risk .Surely agentleman should_not lay much stress upon_this when alady is in most desperate need of_his help ? "

" you_will_be in_such afalse position ."

"Well, that_is part of_the risk . there_is no other possible way of regaining these letters .The unfortunate lady has_not the money, and there_are none of her people in whom she_could confide .To-morrow is_the last day of grace, and unless we_can get the letters to-night this villain will_be as good as his word and will bring about her ruin . I_must, therefore, abandon my client to her fate or I_must play this last card .Between ourselves, Watson, it's asporting duel between this fellow Milverton and me .He had, as_you saw, the best of_the first exchanges; but my self-respect and my reputation are concerned to fight it to afinish ."

"Well, I don't like it; but I suppose it must_be," said I ."When do we start ? "

" you_are_not coming ."

"Then you_are_not going," said I ."I give_you my word of honour -- and I never broke it in my life -- that i_will take acab straight to_the police-station and give_you away unless you let me share this adventure with_you ."

" you_can't help me ."

"How do_you_know that ? you_can't tell what may happen .Anyway, my resolution is taken .Other people beside you_have self-respect and even reputations ."

Holmes had looked annoyed, but his brow cleared, and he clapped me on_the shoulder .

"Well, well, my dear fellow, be it so . we_have shared the same room for_some_years, and it would_be amusing if_we ended by sharing the same cell . you_know, Watson, I don't mind confessing to_you that I_have always had an idea that i_would_have made ahighly efficient criminal . this_is_the chance of_my lifetime in_that direction .See here ! " he_took aneat little leather case out of adrawer, and opening it he exhibited anumber of shining instruments ." this_is afirst-class, up-to-date burgling kit, with nickel-plated jemmy, diamond-tipped glass-cutter, adaptable keys, and every modern improvement which the march of civilisation demands .Here, too, is my dark lantern .Everything is in_order . have_you apair of silent shoes ? "

" I_have rubber-soled tennis shoes ."

"Excellent .And amask ? "

" I_can make acouple out of black silk ."

" I_can_see that you_have astrong natural turn for_this sort of thing . very_good; do_you make_the masks . we_shall_have some cold supper before we start . it_is now nine-thirty .At eleven we_shall drive as far as Church Row . it_is aquarter of an hour's walk from there to Appledore Towers . we_shall_be at work before midnight .Milverton is aheavy sleeper and retires punctually at ten-thirty .With any luck we_should_be back here by two, with_the Lady Eva's letters in my pocket ."

Holmes and I put on_our dress-clothes, so_that we_might appear to_be two theatre-goers homeward bound .In Oxford Street we picked up ahansom and drove to an address in Hampstead .Here we paid off our cab, and with_our great-coats buttoned up, for it_was bitterly cold and_the wind seemed to blow through us, we walked along the edge of_the Heath .

"It's abusiness that needs delicate treatment," said Holmes ."These documents are contained in asafe in_the fellow's study, and_the study is_the ante-room of_his bed-chamber . on_the other hand, like all these stout, little men who do themselves well, he_is aplethoric sleeper .Agatha -- that's my fiance -- says it_is
