adangerous wild beast .He roamed about_the house, and_the women ran for_it when_they heard him coming .Late in_the evening he went down to_his own hut .About two o'clock the following morning his daughter, who slept with her window open, heard amost fearful yell from_that direction, but it_was no unusual thing for him to bawl and shout when he_was in drink, so no notice was taken .On rising at seven one_of_the maids noticed that_the door of_the hut was open, but so great was_the terror which the man caused that_it_was midday before anyone would venture down to_see what had become of him .Peeping into_the open door they saw asight which sent them flying with white faces into_the village .Within an hour i_was on_the spot and had taken over the case .

"Well, I_have fairly steady nerves, as_you_know, Mr Holmes, but I give_you my word that I got ashake when I put my head into that little house . it_was droning like aharmonium with_the flies and bluebottles, and_the floor and walls were like aslaughter-house .He had called it acabin, and acabin it_was sure enough, for you_would_have thought that you were in aship . there_was abunk at one end, asea-chest, maps and charts, apicture of_the SEA UNICORN, aline of log-books on ashelf, all exactly as one would expect to_find it in acaptain's room .And there in_the middle of it was_the man himself, his face twisted like alost soul in torment, and_his great brindled beard stuck upwards in_his agony .Right through his broad breast asteel harpoon had_been driven, and it had sunk deep into_the wood of_the wall behind him . he_was pinned like abeetle on acard . of_course, he_was quite dead, and had_been so from_the instant that he had uttered that last yell of agony .

" I_know your methods, sir, and I applied them .Before I permitted anything to_be moved I examined most carefully the ground outside, and also the floor of_the room .There were no footmarks ."

"Meaning that you saw none ? "

"I assure you, sir, that there were none ."

"My good Hopkins, I_have investigated many crimes, but I_have never yet seen one which_was committed by aflying creature .As long as_the criminal remains upon two legs so_long must there be some indentation, some abrasion, some trifling displacement which can_be detected by_the scientific searcher . it_is incredible that_this blood-bespattered room contained no trace which could_have aided us .I understand, however, from_the inquest that there were some objects which you failed to overlook ? "

The young inspector winced at my companion's ironical comments .

" i_was afool not to_call you in at_the_time, Mr Holmes .However, that's past praying for now .Yes, there were several objects in_the room which called for special attention .One was_the harpoon with_which the deed was committed .It had_been snatched down from arack on_the wall .Two others remained there, and there_was avacant place for_the third . on_the stock was engraved `Ss .SEA UNICORN, Dundee .' This seemed to establish that_the crime had_been done in amoment of fury, and that_the murderer had seized the first weapon which came in_his way .The fact that_the crime was committed at two in_the morning, and yet Peter Carey was fully dressed, suggested that he had an appointment with_the murderer, which_is borne out by_the fact that abottle of rum and two dirty glasses stood upon_the table ."

"Yes," said Holmes; " i_think that both inferences are permissible .Was there any_other spirit but rum in_the room ? "

"Yes; there_was atantalus containing brandy and whisky on_the sea-chest . it_is of no importance to_us, however, since_the decanters were full, and it had therefore not been used ."

"For all that its presence has some significance," said Holmes ."However, let_us hear some more about_the objects which do seem to_you to bear upon_the case ."

" there_was this tobacco-pouch upon_the table ."

"What part of_the table ? "

"It lay in_the middle . it_was of coarse seal-skin -- the straight-haired skin, with aleather thong to bind it .Inside was `P .C .' on_the flap . there_was half an ounce of strong ship's tobacco in_it ."

"Excellent ! What more ? "

Stanley Hopkins drew from_his pocket adrab-covered note-book .The outside was rough and worn, the leaves discoloured . on_the first page were written the initials "J .H .N ." and_the date "1883 ." Holmes laid it on_the table and examined it in_his minute way, while Hopkins and I gazed over each shoulder . on_the second page were the printed letters "C .P .R .," and then came several sheets of numbers .Another heading was Argentine, another Costa Rica, and another San Paulo, each with pages of signs and figures after it .

"What do_you make of_these ? " asked Holmes .

"They appear to_be lists of Stock Exchange securities . i_thought that `J .H .N .' were the initials of abroker, and_that `C .P .R .' may have_been his client ."

"Try Canadian Pacific Railway," said Holmes .

Stanley Hopkins swore between his teeth and struck his thigh with_his clenched hand .

"What afool I_have_been ! " he cried ." of_course, it_is as_you say .Then `J .H .N .' are the only initials we_have to solve . I_have already examined the old Stock Exchange lists, and I_can find no one in 1883 either in_the House or among_the outside brokers whose initials correspond with_these .Yet I_feel that_the clue is_the most important one that I hold . you_will admit, Mr Holmes, that_there_is apossibility that_these initials are those of_the second person who was present -- in other words, of_the murderer . i_would also urge that_the introduction into_the case of adocument relating to large masses of valuable securities gives us for_the first time some indication of amotive for_the crime ."

Sherlock Holmes's face showed that he_was thoroughly taken aback by_this new development .

" I_must admit both your points," said he ."I confess that_this note-book, which did_not appear at_the inquest, modifies any views which I_may_have formed .I had come to atheory of_the crime in_which I_can find no place for_this . have_you endeavoured to trace any of_the securities here mentioned ? "

"Inquiries are now being made at_the offices, but I_fear that_the complete register of_the stockholders of_these South American concerns is in South America, and_that some weeks must elapse before we_can trace the shares ."

Holmes had_been examining the cover of_the note-book with_his magnifying lens .

"Surely there_is some discoloration here," said he .

"Yes, sir, it_is ablood-stain . i_told you that I picked the book off the floor ."

" was_the blood-stain above or below ? "

" on_the side next the boards ."

"Which proves, of_course, that_the book was dropped after_the crime was committed ."

"Exactly, Mr Holmes .I appreciated that point, and I conjectured that_it_was dropped by_the murderer in_his hurried flight .It lay near the door ."

"I suppose that none of_these securities have_been found among_the property of_the dead man ? "

"No, sir ."

" have_you any reason to suspect robbery ? "

"No, sir .Nothing seemed
