for_it in person on Monday morning .'

"Seeing that my client was anxious to leave, I_said no more but, calling for_my cashier, I ordered him to_pay over fifty 1000 pound notes .When i_was alone once more, however, with_the precious case lying upon_the table in front of me, I_could_not but think with some misgivings of_the immense responsibility which it entailed upon me .There could_be no_doubt that, as it_was anational possession, ahorrible scandal would ensue if any misfortune should occur to_it .I already regretted having ever consented to_take charge of it .However, it_was too late to alter the matter now, so I locked it up in my private safe and turned once more to my work .

"When evening came I_felt that_it would_be an imprudence to leave so precious athing in_the office behind me .Bankers' safes had_been forced before now, and why should_not mine be ? if_so, how terrible would_be the position in_which i_should find myself ! I determined, therefore, that for_the next few_days i_would always carry the case backward and forward with me, so that_it might never be really out of_my reach . with_this intention, I called acab and drove out to my house at Streatham, carrying the jewel with me . I_did_not breathe freely until I had taken it upstairs and locked it in_the bureau of_my dressing-room .

"And now aword as_to my household, Mr Holmes, for i_wish you to thoroughly understand the situation .My groom and my page sleep out_of_the house, and may_be set aside altogether . I_have three maid-servants who have_been with me anumber of years and whose absolute reliability is quite above suspicion .Another, Lucy Parr, the second waiting-maid, has only been in my service a few_months .She came with an excellent character, however, and has always given me satisfaction . she_is avery pretty girl and has attracted admirers who_have occasionally hung about_the place . that_is_the only drawback which we_have found to her, but we believe her to_be athoroughly good girl in every way .

" so_much for_the servants .My family itself is so small that_it_will not take me long to describe it . I_am awidower and_have an only son, Arthur .He has_been adisappointment to_me, Mr Holmes-- agrievous disappointment . I_have no_doubt that I_am myself to blame .People tell me that I_have spoiled him .Very likely I_have .When my dear wife died I_felt that he_was all I had to love . I_could_not bear to_see the smile fade even for amoment from_his face . I_have never denied him awish .Perhaps it would_have_been better for both of us had I been sterner, but I meant it for_the best .

" it_was naturally my intention that he_should succeed me in my business, but he_was not of abusiness turn . he_was wild, wayward, and, to_speak the truth, I_could_not trust him in_the handling of large sums of money .When he_was young he became amember of an aristocratic club, and there, having charming manners, he_was soon the intimate of anumber of men with long purses and expensive habits .He learned to play heavily at cards and to squander money on_the turf, until he had again and again to_come to_me and implore me to_give him an advance upon his allowance, that he might settle his debts of honour .He tried more than once to break away from_the dangerous company which he_was keeping, but each_time the influence of_his friend, Sir George Burnwell, was enough to draw him back again .

"And, indeed, I_could_not wonder that such aman as Sir George Burnwell should gain an influence over him, for he has frequently brought him to my house, and I_have found myself that I_could hardly resist the fascination of_his manner . he_is older than Arthur, aman of_the world to_his finger-tips, one who had_been everywhere, seen everything, abrilliant talker, and aman of great personal beauty .Yet when i_think of him in cold blood, far away from_the glamour of_his presence, I_am convinced from_his cynical speech and_the look which I_have caught in_his eyes that he_is one who_should_be deeply distrusted .So i_think, and so, too, thinks my little Mary, who has awoman's quick insight into character .

"And now there_is only she to_be described . she_is my niece; but when my brother died five years_ago and left her alone in_the_world I adopted her, and_have looked upon her ever_since as my daughter . she_is asunbeam in my house--sweet, loving, beautiful, awonderful manager and housekeeper, yet as tender and quiet and gentle as awoman could_be . she_is my right hand . I_do_not know what I_could do without her .In only_one matter has she ever gone against my wishes .Twice my boy has asked her to marry him, for he loves her devotedly, but each_time she has refused him . i_think that if anyone could_have drawn him into_the right path it would_have_been she, and_that his marriage might_have changed his whole life; but now, alas ! it_is too late--forever too late !

"Now, Mr Holmes, you_know the people who live under my roof, and I_shall continue with my miserable story .

"When we were taking coffee in_the drawing-room that night after dinner, i_told Arthur and Mary my experience, and of_the precious treasure which we had under our roof, suppressing only the name of_my client .Lucy Parr, who had brought in_the coffee, had, I_am_sure, left the room; but I_cannot swear that_the door was closed .Mary and Arthur were much interested and wished to_see the famous coronet, but i_thought it better not to disturb it .

"'Where have_you put it ? ' asked Arthur .

"'In my own bureau .'

"'Well, I_hope to goodness the house won't be burgled during the night .' said he .

"' it_is locked up,' I answered .

"'Oh, any old key will fit that bureau .When i_was ayoungster I_have opened it myself with_the key of_the box-room cupboard .'

"He often had awild way of talking, so_that i_thought little of what he_said .He followed me to my room, however, that night with avery grave face .

"'Look here, dad,' said he with_his eyes cast down, ' can_you let me have 200 pounds ? '

"'No, I_cannot ! ' I answered sharply .' I_have_been far too generous with_you in money matters .'

"' you_have_been very kind,' said he, 'but I_must_have this money, or else I_can never show my face inside the club again .'

"'And a very_good thing, too ! ' I cried .

"'Yes, but you_would_not_have me leave it adishonoured man,' said he .' I_could_not bear the disgrace . I_must raise the money in some way, and if you_will_not let me have it, then I_must try other means .'

" i_was very angry, for this_was the third demand during the month .'You shall_not_have afarthing from me,' I cried, on_which he bowed and left the room without another word .Josef Friedrich, 1906

"When he_was gone I unlocked my bureau, made sure that my treasure was safe, and locked it again .Then I started to_go round the house to_see that all was secure--a duty which I usually leave to Mary but which i_thought it well to perform myself that night .As I_came down the stairs I_saw Mary herself at_the side window of_the hall, which she closed and fastened as I approached .

"'Tell me, dad,' said she, looking, i_thought, alittle disturbed, 'did you give Lucy, the maid, leave to_go out to-night ? '

"'Certainly not .'

"'She came in just now by_the back door . I_have no_doubt that she has only been to_the side gate to_see someone, but i_think that_it_is hardly safe and should_be stopped .'

"' you_must speak to her in_the morning, or i_will if_you prefer it . are_you sure that everything is fastened ? '

"' quite_sure, dad .'

"'Then .good-night .' I kissed her and went up_to my bedroom again, where i_was soon asleep .

" I_am endeavouring to_tell you everything, Mr Holmes, which_may have any bearing upon_the case, but I beg that you_will question me upon any point which I_do_not make clear ."

" on_the contrary, your statement is singularly lucid ."

"I come to apart of_my story now in_which i_should wish to_be particularly so . I_am not avery heavy sleeper, and_the anxiety in my mind tended, no_doubt, to_make me even less so than usual .About two in_the morning, then, i_was awakened by some sound in_the house .It had ceased ere
